The first military gift that Massillonites received was a gun in 1812. The town's founder, George Rogers Clark, donated a rifle to the Ohio Volunteers during the War of 1812. In 1837, the Ohio General Assembly granted a charter to the Military and Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Massillon became an affiliate school within Annapolis and soon afterwards, it offered military gifts as well. One such gift was a cannon from Colonel Samuel Benton of Kentucky in 1840. Benton had been asked by then-Governor Winfield Scott to deliver guns to militiamen fighting for Scott during the Mexican-American War. A few years later, Massillonite John Clements donated an artillery piece to West Point College in New York City. In 1853, Springfield Armory purchased Clements' piece for its own armory on National Avenue in Springfield Heights. This marks the first time that massachusetts had ever given money for arms production outside of Boston. In 1865, Massillon gifted two cannons to Fort Donelson (now Chattanooga) Tennessee after Confederate General Robert Ewell's army captured it during the Battle of Missionary Ridge. The cannons were used against Union forces throughout the war and remain among Chattanooga's most famous landmarks today. It wasn't until 1898 whenMassillon gave back something truly unique when they gifted four American flags (one blue and three white) to be flown at halfmast along with all other national flags on July 4th annually in commemoration of our country's independence from Great Britain; this event is now known as "Flag Day".

In 1825 Massillon became one of twelve townships within Trumbull County from which it took its name from President James Ketchum’s brother-in-law – “Trobllion” – who had purchased land in that area two years earlier for $1 per acre (about $30 today). Another interesting fact about Massillon is that it was once home to three newspapers: The Republican in 1868-69; The Beacon News Journal from 1870-71 until it went out of business; and The Cincinnati Enquirer from 1886-87 before it merged with another newspaper, the Cleveland Plain Dealer (now Steubenville) to form what is now called First American Media Inc., one of America’s leadingpublishersof digital media products.. Many notable people from Massillon have served in high positions in the United States government including two U.S. senators, one congressman, and several governorships throughout the years.
In 1814, the United States acquired land in what is now Massillon Township. The township was organized on February 14 of that year. It was named for General George Washington and his wife, Martha.
