Massillon is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Grant County. The population was 43,826 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Delaware River upstream from Cleveland, Ohio, across from Youngstown and two hours by car or bus from Akron, Ohio. The site where Massillon now stands was first inhabited in 1788 by Native Americans known as the Miami Nation. In 1813, General Andrew Jackson moved his army through Grant County to attack General Wayne and his militia near Mentor while they were resting after their victory over Tecumseh at Boston Bridge. Seeing an opportunity to inflict damage on Wayne's retreating force and make him look like a coward, Jackson ordered his troops to fire into the unarmed Indians without warning them of possible consequences. This massacre led to Jackson being impeached and removed from office three years later for perjury. In 1814 George Brown purchased about eight acres (28,000 m²) of land east of present-day Massillon Township on what is now Buffalo Creek Road for $1 per acre ($20 per square kilometer). He named it "Brown's Mills". The township was organized in 1827 under Law 7 of that year, when it included all present-day Grant County except part of Bethel Township which formed part of Warren County until 1907. In 1830 James Denny established a gristmill on current-day Buffalo Creek Road west of town for grinding corn; this mill became one of the larger mills in northeast Ohio until it closed in 1985. In 1836 Carlisle Johnston foundedthe National Agricultural Bank in Massillon with capitalization totaling $10,000 (). At its peak bank assets were $255 million (). The bank failed largely because agricultural prices collapsed during the Panic of 1837(). A new national agricultural bank opened in Cincinnati in 1840 with capitalization totaling $50 million (). However also during this time period much progress was made by American Millers' Company () which had been established earlier that year as a flour mill at Negaunee Falls southeast of Mahoning Valley by John Condon and others including Isaac Asimov (), Edward Teller (), Clifford Berry (), Marvin Minsky (), David Hilbert (), Albert Einstein(), Solomon Loeb () and other notable figures associated with early twentieth century industrial research camps such as Brookhaven National Laboratory (). By 1898 American Millers' Company had become one hundred percentowned by Massey Ferguson Incorporated (); however Flour Mill No 2 remains open today as a museum operated by The Friends Of Flour Mills Ltd., a not-for-profit organization based in massillon
