The Coast Guard gift history in Massillon, Ohio dates back to the early 1800s. The first Coast Guard station in Massillon was established in 1806 and served as a storage depot for ships off of the coast of Michigan. In 1827, the Coast Guard Station at Canton was relocated to Massillon and became responsible for patrolling the Great Lakes region. In 1938, the Coast Guard Station at Massillon were moved to Sandusky and continued serving as an operational center for the Great Lakes Region until 1966 when they were transferred to Cleveland. After being inactive for many years, the Sandusky station was closed in 1994 and is no longer used by the Coast Guard. Today, there are three Coast Guard stations located in Massillon: one which serves as a detention facility; one which provides basic law enforcement services; and one which provides emergency response services such as search and rescue. Additionally, five naval vessels that serve on Lake Erie have been stationed at Massillon since 1984. The Coast Guard has also provided Ambulance Services on multiple occasions during natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. Despite these years of service, many aspects of gifts given by members of the Coast guard remain unique to this branch of government. In 1938, the Coast Guard received its first casualties on duty and decided to give members of the public access to casualty information so that they could be more prepared in case their loved ones were injured or lost at sea. In 1951, the Coast Guard received its first aviation supplies. These supplies came in handy as the Coast Guard began conducting Search and Rescue operations off of Maine's coast. In 1976, the Coastal Guardsman Museum was opened in Mount Pleasant, Rhode Island and it is now home to over 100 artifacts from across the span of coastal guard history! Since then, gifts have continued to be an important part of the Coast Guard's Gift History. In 2002, a new ship called The Mary Celeste was donated by New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and her name is inscribed on one side of shoreguard Headquarters Building! This donation helped support Operation Neptune’s Spear whichSearch for survivors after a tsunami destroyed much of Japan’s coastline. Massillon was founded in 1786 by General William Henry Harrison and his wife, Martha. The town was originally called Harmony, but the name was changed to Massillon in honor of George Washington in 1802. The town has a rich history that can be traced back to its early days as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1814, Massillon became the capital of Ohio after Ohio's statehood. It was also during this time that Massillon began developing into a major manufacturing center for bicycles and other items related to transportation. After World War II, the town experienced rapid growth thanks to its status as an industrial center. Today, Massillon is known for its production of agricultural products such as corn and soybeans.
The first settlers in the area that is now Massillon, Ohio were German Lutherans. The town was founded on July 6, 1814 by John Ziegler and his family. It was named for George Washington Ziegler, a frontier landowner who donated the land to the town.
