In 1824, Marysville was founded by Ohio pioneers. The town was named in honor of the mother of one of the first American settlers, Mrs. Mary Smith. The original plat map for the town shows that it consisted of a few scattered houses and a small creek running through it. The town grew rapidly in subsequent years due to its location near the new Cincinnati and Pittsburgh Railroad and because of its strategic location on high ground between two important settlements, Lebanon and West Chester. By 1830, Marysville had more than fifty residents and had built a few stores, churches, schools and a post office. In 1831, residents voted to rename their town after George Washington as part of an effort to promote patriotism among the community's members during the American Revolution. The growth of Marysville continued into the 20th century with numerous businesses opening up throughout the region including breweries (Marysville Brewery is still in business today), banks (the first bank in Ohio opened in 1832) and scores of homes being built along High Street which became known as "The Main Street Of America." With so many people living in one place, crime rates were low until around World War II when they began to rise due to social unrest following increased immigration from abroad. However, by 1970-71 unemployment rates had fallen below 3% for the first time since before Toledo’s incorporation as a separate city in 1907-08; making Marysville one of Toledo’s most prosperous communities ever! Today, Marysville is known for its annual 4th Of July fireworks show which features some of the most beautiful displays anywhere on Earth; as well as its rich history which can be seen all throughout its streets and buildings!
The Town of Marysville was organized in 1811 when a group of farmers and traders founded the town on the Scioto River. The town grew rapidly, reaching its peak in 1824 with a population of over 100 people. In 1830, the town was renamed to honor General James A. Garfield, who had died that year. The town declined in the 1840s, but revived in the 1850s when new settlers arrived from Kentucky and other states. By 1860, Marysville had a population of just under 150 people and it merged with neighboring towns to form the city of Cleveland.
