Marysville is a city in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Marysville was James Robertson in 1788. The original name of the town was "Harrisonburg." In 1812, the town changed its name to "Mansfield," after General John Mansfield who fought in the War of 1812. In 1824, the town changed its name again to "Marysville" and became a village. On July 1, 1850, Marysville became a town when it voted to incorporate as such by an act of the Ohio General Assembly. It had a population of 2,827 when it incorporated. On December 12, 1951 vote by residents of Marysville over annexation into Cleveland resulted in Mayor Edwin Ladd becoming mayor for life with no term limit and City Councilwoman Eva Fitch taking on four-year terms only renewable once per year through 2020. Marysville is located in Kent County, Ohio and is the oldest community in the county. The town was founded by General John C. Fremont on December 11, 1814 as part of a land grant to his brother-in-law, Samuel Wellman. The town was named for Mary (or Martha) Waite, one of Fremont's three children from a previous marriage. Fremont built the first school in Marysville in 1817 and soon began trading with other settlements in the area. In 1830, he began construction on a sawmill and gristmill which would remain in operation until 1917. In 1857, General James Speed established a post office at Marysville. The town quickly grew and by 1870 had 30 stores, 10 grammar schools and two churches. The Panic of 1893 broke out and did great damage to the local economy; however, Marysville continued to grow despite the economic difficulties. By 1901, there were over 150 businesses operating in town with 2200 residents. During World War I, Marysville became an important supply stop for military units travelling through central Ohio; however, due to its small size it was not overwhelmed by the war effort. After World War I ended, many people left for good reasons including joblessness or changes within society that made living conditions much harder than before. However, some people decided to stay because they found new opportunities available such as manufacturing jobs that opened up after technology changed throughout America during this time period. A post office reopened at Marysville on October 1st 1920; however it closed again on July 14th 1921 due to lack of mail volume resulting from prohibition laws being passed at this time). In 1926–1927 there were several attempts by city officials to increase population but no success until 1930 when Sheriff Harry Siskel suggested setting up a water filtration plant adjacent to Main Street which would generate enough revenue to keep the post office open year round instead of only during summer months when tourism was high given nearby visitations from Cleveland Park!
