Marion is a small town in Sandusky County, Ohio. The population was 2,655 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Pistons and his family; it grew rapidly during the gold rush of 1849-1850, when many miners came to Marion to prospect foruggets. After the end of the gold rush, Marion declined gradually until it became a small village in 1907. In 1952, Marion became an incorporated town after approval from the Ohio General Assembly. It annexed portions of neighboring townships in 1957 and 1959; these annexations made Marion an official city with its own police department and government services. In 2006, voters approved separate annexation of parts of Summit Township north of downtown; this annexation completed what had been a two-year process that began in 2003 when township officials sought permission to merge with Marion. Over time, businesses within Marriotown began to grow larger, creating jobs for local residents. Meanwhile, life around town slowly started to change after World War II ended. Businesses closed down; people stopped manufacturing; and homes started becoming more expensive than ever before. But despite these challenges, Marriotown continued to thrive over the years until 2000 when it amalgamated with neighboring townships to form Township-Marion County (TMC). Today, there are over 8500 residents living in Morris Township proper (the easternmost part), Ashtabula Township (to the west), Chippewa Township (to the east) and unincorporated areas near them all totaling over 70 square miles!
