On December 12, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for 3 brigades (the 1st brigade being under command of Maj.-Gen. James Hogg) to be raised in Illinois for service in southern Indiana and west Kentucky under Brigadier-General George Crook. These troops were later renamed 2nd Brigade and 3rd Brigade during their service in Kentucky andIndiana respectively before they were transferred back east to duty at Horatio Seymour's brigade camp located near Lebanon Junction on September 11, 1862 following Union victory at Antietam Creek. After Confederate forces retreated into Virginia following Beauregard's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 these brigades along with other units throughout the Confederacy were decommissioned and merged into newly constituted 4th Infantry Division present day First Battalion Ohio National Guard unit which is still active today organizationally

Marion, Ohio is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,859 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Cuyahoga County and it is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first post office in Marion was established on November 15, 1810. The name of the town may come from a natural water body called "Marianna" which lay just south of where the present-day town stands. A canal was built through this body of water by Nicholas Mifflin and others in 1828, and settlers began to arrive there beginning in 1829. In 1830, David Brewster settled here with his family and began operations as an innkeeper/ tavern keeper. Brewster named his new community after Marion County, Indiana (now Michigan). The first school building in Marion was erected on Main Street in 1830 according to local history books; it served as a public school until 1836 when it became a private academy for girls. In 1840, three men – Levi Coffin, John Lapp and Hiram Wright – set out from Pittsburgh to find land west of Cincinnati so they could start anew. They arrived at what is now Akron on May 19th but soon realized that they had not found what they were looking for when they discovered rich coal seams under Mount Carmel Township which lay about two miles east of their current location. They returned home after exploring some other areas within Ohio before finally settling down on a property near what is today's downtown Marion center on July 3rd 1840 with five families: John Cook (father), James Cook (brother), Ebenezer Cook (uncle), Sarah Craftsman (widow of Gideon Clark) and Solomon Pratt (son of Solomon Prentice). Five years later another group led by Andrew Carnegie landed at Pierrepont Harbor outside Mobile Alabama with vessels carrying oreautaing supplies for the then newly founded American Steel Company Limited The first mills were built around 1850 by Elisha Putnam & Sons who also operated a gristmill; these mills produced flour feed which was shipped off to surrounding settlements for grinding into bricks or other products needed by residents along the railroads such as those connecting Cincinnati with Cleveland
The history of Marion, Ohio can be traced back to the time before the United States was founded. The area that is now Marion was first settled by Native Americans, who were known as the Lenape. In 1813, after the American Revolution, Congress passed a bill which granted land to the Native Americans in what is now Ohio. The land was divided into parcels and given to different groups of people, including those from Pennsylvania and Virginia. TheLenape were given portions of central Ohio while other groups received smaller amounts of land around present-day Akron and Cincinnati. In 1830, when settlers began arriving in what is now Marion County, they started looking for a place to live and work. They found that there wasn’t enough available land to all them so they started trading with the indigenous people in order to get more acreage. In 1834, when President John Quincy Adams approved a bill which granted citizenship to any person who had contributed $25 towards country expenses during both naturalization ceremonies and within five years after being admitted as an American citizen (a process known as “patriotship”), approximately 150 men from Philadelphia responded with offers of money and land in central Ohio. The first white man ever killed in what is now Marion County was James Winchester on July 10th, 1836 while he was driving his herd of cattle across the Scioto River near present day Tellico Plains State Park
