In the year 1802, when Ohio was created as a United States territory, its residents voted to name it after Marion County in West Virginia. The vote was part of a larger effort to attract settlers to the new country and increase the population of Ohio by 50%. The county seat at that time was Rossville, Kentucky. The first settler in what is now Marion County was James W. Wicklen who arrived in 1810 from Kentucky. He built his log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River near today's downtown Cincinnati. Other early settlers included John Pritchard and Isaac Brownell. One of the most important events in Marion County's history occurred during the American Civil War when General Ulysses S Grant occupied Rossville on October 25, 1861 and announced his plan to move all Confederate prisoners away from Ohio into Indiana. This measure had been proposed by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, who felt that Union troops could more easily control these prisoners if they were kept close to their war-torn home state. When Union forces reached Rossville on November 3rd they found that all but one of the occupant's logs had been cut down for use as firewood by local farmers who were afraid that giving up their property would mean increased taxes heaped upon them by Grant's military occupation force. Some $1,500 worth of supplies were also seized from these farmers before being allowed back into circulation two days later when Federal troops withdrew from town under cover of darkness. The event has come to be known as "The Raid". It is also mentioned in chapter 8 of my book "From Slavery To Freedom: A History Of African Americans In Ohio" which tells about how many slaves escaped across America during this time period and made their way back home to freedom carrying with them valuable items such as tools, clothing and jewelry which became an important source of revenue for enslaved families once they regained their liberty
In 1821, the first white settler in Marion Township, Ohio, was James C. Cutler. The township was organized on February 15, 1824. On December 2, 1830, it became a part of the newly created Cincinnati-Muncie area.
