The history of Marion coffee can be traced back to 1847 when a small community of farmers and traders founded the town on the banks of the Scioto River. The first coffee was grown in nearby Lawrence Township, but by 1860, Marion had become the leading center for coffee production in central Ohio. In 1865, John C. Slocum began trading goods from his plantation near Scioto Rapids for coffee beans from Marion farmers. By 1870, Slocum's company controlled more than 60% of the total bean crop in central Ohio. The growth of Marion Coffee was due to its location, its excellent soil quality, and its ability to produce high-quality beans at an affordable price. In 1892, Edwin Ayer bought out Slocum's interests and continued production under his own name until 1951. During this time period, Ayer's company made a significant contribution to the development of Columbus Coffee Company as one of America's largest coffee manufacturers.
In 1821, Ohio Gov. George Washington Lewis made Marion the official capital of the United States. The town was named in honor of General David Wilkinson, who had fought in the War for Independence and died in battle at Fallen Timbers. In 1825, a new county was created from parts of Wayne and Champaign counties and Marion became its county seat. The population grew rapidly thanks to cotton plantations and other businesses that sprang up around the town. In 1833, a national canal was built through central Ohio and Marion became one of its many towns along its route. A new courthouse was built in 1839 and by 1850, the town had over 3,000 residents. The commercial center declined during the 1840s as railroad construction increased traffic on the canal but resumed development during the 1860s when Ohioans began to settle in rural areas across northeast Indiana Territory. Although cotton continued to be a major economic force until after World War II, Marion is now an agricultural community with a small manufacturing sector.

Marion, Ohio is a small town in southwestern Ohio. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County and the largest city in Butler County by population. Marion was founded in 1814 as a post office named for Major John Morris. The current name of the town comes from General George Washington's daughter, Martha Washington Rossiter, who married Colonel James Wilkinson in 1824. The first European to visit what is now Marion was explorer Christopher Columbus on his second voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on October 12, 1492. The area that includes present-day Marion was part of France until 1763 and then Great Britain until 1767 when it became part of the United States of America. French traders explored this area early in history and conducted trade with Native Americans here before finally settling by 1800. Indian traders also visited this area during this time period and contact between Europeans and Indians led to various land grants being made to various groups including those given to Colonel James Wilkinson (the father of General George Washington). In 1814, President James Ketchum approved plans for a new national capital located at Indianapolis which would be called "Milton." However, after Indiana became a state in 1816, Ketchum ordered construction halted due to lack of funds while he lobbied Congress for an appropriations bill necessary for building the new capital. This helped support the growing city and its residents as they started to build their own civilizations. In 1871, a railroad was built through Marion and it quickly became another key player in this community’s development. This rail line helped increase commercial activity and bring new families into town. It also allowed for more people to live close to each other and commerce grew even stronger than ever before!
