Marion, Ohio is a small town in theU.S. state of Ohio located about 25 miles south of Columbus and about 20 miles north of Dayton. The population was 3,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton- Marion-Zanesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named for General James W. Marion, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as a U.S. Representative from Ohio from 1881 to 1889. The city was originally called Frenchtown because it was one of several towns founded by refugees from France during the American Revolution who were looking for a new home in North America after their homeland had been taken over by Mexico. The name change occurred due to confusion with Frenchtown, Pennsylvania which also became known as "Frenchtown" after its incorporation into the United States in 1792 as an independent town under English control (the original Frenchtown had been founded by refugees fleeing British rule in Nova Scotia). As early as 1802, pioneer settlers were using trails running through what is now downtown Marion to get to their trading posts near what is now Springfield Township on the Scioto River east of where Indianola lies today. In 1825, John Capps established himself along what is now Delaware Avenue while working for his father's business interests; he soon widened and improved this route when he built his first inn hereabouts – Westinghouse House – which still stands today (Capps Place). By 1830, there were three hotels operating here: One owned by George Naylor and two jointly operated by Nicholas Voight & Company (Naylor's) – both successors to Voight Brothers Furniture Store which opened on Main Street in 1828 commercializing trade with Native Americans then living among them before becoming fully developed into an agricultural center beneath Manchester Township line back then4 Some time between 1830 and 1840 another hotel/ tavern/ store complex appeared fronting North Delaware Avenue within present day Spring Mills: Three buildings erected at or near what are now Fourth Street NE; these structures still stand today handsomely exhibiting character typical of that period – Gables Hotel (now Goodyear Museum), Second Hotel (now National Museum), Third Hotel (now Aiken County Courthouse). Gables may have been designed by Christopher Pryor3 but actual construction not known for certain; anyhow they remain significant examples illustrating frontier life during this era5 This last structure probably stood until sometime around 1870 when it burned down6 . Newport Methodist Episcopal Church began services at Zion Hall on South High School campus shortly thereafter7 Another early presence hereabouts followed that year when Elijah Howe opened up a wagon load bakery along four blocks bounded northerly on First Street between Delaware Avenue and South High School Boulevard8 . From this shop Howe proceeded rapidly to establish one or more other grocery stores throughout much central OH&NE region9 After some years hibernation Howe reopened his store at 4th and Prospect Streets NW10 just southeast of modern Day Union Station11 ; however most current reference thereto exceedingly difficult locate12 ; anyway no evidence survives prior thereto whatsoever13

The town of Marion, Ohio was founded in 1792 by the surveyors who mapped the area that would become Ohio. The town growth began due to the boom in lumbering and farming around it and its location on the main road between Cincinnati and Cleveland. The first post office was established in 1809, and by 1820 Marion had a population of about 100 people. Development slowed down during the 1840s as Germany became dominant in world shipping and trade, which limited production at local mills. However, when railroads were built through central Ohio during the 1850s, Marion started to prosper again as a manufacturing center with several businesses such as paper companies and shipbuilders prospering. In 1860, when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Ohio from Virginia, Marion sent troops to help protect Cincinnati from his forces. When Union General Ulysses S. Grant took control of the country following the Civil War, he ordered all Federal mills closed in order to focus on reconstruction efforts. With no new industry available in Marion after Reconstruction ended, residents turned their attention to agriculture which continued to be an important part of their economy until World War II when aluminum production increased significantly in nearby Toledo creating a need for more warehouses and other storage facilities near downtown Dayton. By 1960 almost all industries had been eliminated or transitioned into new modes of operation thanks to advances in technology that made it possible forOhioanstoproducetheirfoodmore efficiently than ever before. Today there are few remnants of industrial activity except for some small-scale manufacturing operations within commerce districts like downtown Dayton or northwest Columbus where goods are bought and sold online or at brick-and-mortar stores
