Marion is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,089 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John C. He named it after his father, who had served as a colonel in the American Revolutionary War and died in 1794 while fighting for independence from Great Britain. In 1827, John C. Marion erected a wooden store and post office building which still stands today. The first settler to arrive in what would become Marion was David Silliman in 1830. When Ohio became an independent country under the Constitution of Ulysses S Grant during the Civil War, Marion remained loyal to the Union side and did not secede until 1865 when Butler County became Confederate territory following the Battle of Perryville. After Reconstruction ended with General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, most white residents moved away or were forced to leave by military orders issued by President Abraham Lincoln shortly afterwards; only a few black residents continued to live here until after World War II when they were forcibly relocated to integrated areas across southern Ohio after Jim Crow laws were introduced there beginning in earnest following passage of that state's Briggs Act ( voted into law by then-Governor Andrew Johnson ).
