In 1806, a group of Ohio settlers, led by Captain John Smith, petitioned the U.S. government for land in what is now Marion County. The request was granted and the group set out to explore the area. They found that the land was rich in timber and coal and decided to settle there. The first post office in Marion County was founded on July 1, 1807. The town of Marion was named after Captain Smith's home county of Virginia. The first white settler in Marion County was James Geddes, who arrived in 1809. From this initial population growth, it is likely that other families also moved into Marion County over time until it had a total population of about 100 people by 1830. In 1850, voting Restrictions were put into place against new settlers from southern states because of fears that they would bring slavery with them to Ohio; however, this does not appear to have been an issue for early residents of Marion County as many slaves came from Georgia or Kentucky rather than southern states during this time period (Klein 2016). The mills around present-day Cincinnati were started between 1800 and 1820 by entrepreneurs such as George Stephenson and Andrew Carnegie (Steele 2018). The sawmills produced lumber which became common throughout much of America due to their productivity; however, the mill owners did not control how the wood was cut or used so some sawmills collapsed during the Great Depression while others continued production despite facing financial difficulties (Fowler 2017). However, thanks to President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal programs which helped revive industries across America following World War II, most mills reopened shortly afterwards (Lehrer 2019). By 1900 there were over 150 mills operating in central Ohio alone(Fowler 2017). This economic boom allowed enough people to accumulate wealth so that banks could start lending money for mortgages and other real estate ventures which allowed businesses such as textile companies and automobiles manufacturers to expand rapidly (Reishender 2019). As a result of all this activity some parts of town began becoming very dense with multiple buildings close together while other areas experienced a decrease in population due largely to loss of jobs associated with increased production elsewhere (Norman 1992).
