On May 15, 1801, General James Krieger garrisoned Fort Dearborn on Point State Park on Great Lakes shoreline about three miles (4 km) northeast of present-day Marietta when he became aware that an Indian force had invaded his territory and looted several buildings at Fort Dearborn including cannons and stores. He ordered General David Wilkinson to march with 10 companies from Dayton to surround and attack the Indians while he himself took command at Fort Dearborn. The attackers were repelled with heavy losses by Wilkinson's men before they could retreat back into their village 60 miles away at Wappinger's Ford on April 30; this event is reported as marking end hostilities between American forces and Native Americans in central Ohio until 1813 when another war began known as the Trail Of Tears involving over 100 massacre by US troops against Creek people near Chattanooga Tennessee In 1807 Nicholas Greece built a sawmill on Mill Creek near present day Greek Village within town limits for local lumberjacks; however mills did not start operating until 1815 because demand for logs was too low due to lack of transportation available from other sources such as Canada or Russia . Marietta, Ohio is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community's name comes from the Dutch word "marijnen" meaning "honeybees." The first European to sight and named what is now Marietta was Pieter van der Houtt on July 4, 1676. He called it "Nieuwegein", which means "New Hague". The first permanent settler in Marietta was Nicholas Hite on October 18, 1825. He built a lumber mill and two stores on the site of present-day Marietta High School. In 1836, John Snetterfield moved his family from Eastville to Marietta and began buying land in Muskegon County for farming purposes. By 1840 he had acquired about 350 acres (183 ha). When he died in 1850 his estate passed to his son James Snetterfield Jr., who sold it to George Stephenson for $2 million dollars in 1860. The town of Marietta was platted on December 10, 1865 by commissioners appointed by President Abraham Lincoln withdrawn from Jackson Township near Detroit as part of an effort to promote development along the riverfront between downtown Detroit and Whiteface Point on Lake Superior.[1] As more people traveled inland they realized that this area offered much potential for agriculture or other new settlements such as industry due to its fertile soils and available water resources.
