When it comes to coffee, there is no question that Marietta has a long and storied history. The city was founded in 1812 as a small trading post on the Great Lakes, and quickly became an important center for agricultural production. Coffee was first grown in this region, and the beans that are now bought and sold throughout the United States were likely ground here. In fact, some of the earliest Starbucks stores were located in Marietta. In recent decades, however, Marietta's status as a center for coffee culture has waned. It's not entirely clear why this is so – maybe people no longer enjoy spending time in an industrial town? But whatever the reason, things have changed since last we checked in with Mariettta Coffee Merchants Association president Bob Purdy. Here's what he had to say: "There are all sorts of reasons why Marietta may have lost its foothold as a center for coffee culture," Purdy said. "Maybe it doesn't have enough cultural attractions or maybe people just don't really enjoy drinking coffee." Whatever the case may be, though, it seems that Marietta would still make a great place to drink your morning cup of Joe – provided you remember to go out for lunch afterwards!

It is part of the Dayton-Middletown-Highpoint, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Marietta was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1814, General George Washington and his army fought an important battle near Marietta against British forces. The battle helped to rename Marietta after General Washington’s victory. In 1868, John Fenton built a sawmill on the Scioto River in what is now Marietta. The mill became one of America's most important logging centers during the late 19th century and early 20th century. There is no one definitive answer to this question, as coffee beans have been around for centuries and there are many different types of coffee. However, some of the most popular types of coffee include Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee, Colombian Cappuccino, Arabica Coffee, and Robusta Coffee. One of the earliest references to coffee in written form was in an ancient Egyptian text known as The Book of the Dead which records an encounter between Set and a monk named Parekh. According to this account, Parekh asked Set what kind of drink he preferred and Set replied with a cupful of black beans. This story suggests that at some point ago coffee was regarded as a central part of Egyptian culture. The first European contact with coffee happened when Portuguese sailors discovered Java in 1402 during their voyage from Asia to India. They brought back plants and seeds along with them, which were later introduced to Europe by Spanish traders. It wasn’t until 1519 that espresso was reported by Giovanni da Verrone while on board the Spanish ship San Salvador in Java. This new type of coffee became widely known throughout Europe after it was featured in a book entitled De arte de rosquillas (On Art Of Roasting). Coffee started being exported from Africa much earlier than it did from Asia or Spain. Ethiopia is thought to be the first country to export coffee Beans directly to Europe in 1825 because they had trade relationships with both Italy and Germany at that time. In 1847, Italian explorer Marco Polo journeyed through India and China searching for routes into Japan but didn’t find any evidence indicating that Java had any significant amounts of Coffee beans or tea leaves.' There are several theories about howJava got its start as a center forcoffee production- One theory suggests that early colonists who arrived on Java island were familiar with Arabian brewing methods used for coffees grown in Sudan so they decided to bring those methods back home rather than try something new.(Abdel Hakim el-Sayed) Another theory suggests that Chinese traders who visited Indonesia before settling down there may have tasted Japanese roasted coffees from Kyoto and brought these back home(Shane Koyczan) however no direct evidence existsto support either theory.- (Christopher Thornhill)

Today, Marietta is an important cultural and commercial center in southwestern Ohio with many popular tourist attractions including the nearby historical district called "The Arts District."
On Marietta, Ohio's first day as a state in 1816, the people voted to create a government for the area. They named it the Northwest Territory and appointed a governor. The first law passed by the new government was an ordinance establishing religious toleration. The territory grew rapidly and by 1830 had 1,500 residents. In 1837, Ohio became a United States state and Marietta became its capital.
