They founded a trading post called "Cook's Station" on what is now known as Old National Road (now I-271). Cooks Station was located about four miles north of present day Marietta on State Route 231. It wasn't until 1825 that settlers began arriving from Virginia and Kentucky by wagon train. These newcomers built cabins near what is now First Baptist Church, which served as their community center until 1907 when Marietta City Hall was built next door. In 1830, James Gadsden built Middle School which remains today as one of the town's most iconic landmarks. Gadsden donated land for the school which became Marietta Municipal Airport after he died in 1943 while serving as its first president. The second largest influx of arrivals occurred during World War II when over 20,000 soldiers were brought to Marietta for assignment to various military branches across America including The United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Base and Third Army Airfield northwest of town where they constructed numerous buildings such as Hale Field 1945 Memorial Stadium which still stands today and home to local high school sports teams.. After the war ended many civilians returned to Mariettta but businesses stopped operations because there weren't enough workers availableongeredically or through skill level so companies outsourced production jobs to other countries especially Mexico where wages were much lower than here in America . This lack of opportunity caused some residents to move away during this time period making way for new waves of immigrants which would help bring economic stability back into the area starting with Polish families who had come overland from Krakow during World War II . In 1954, work started on rebuilding Main Street between Broadway and Highwayside Avenue following a devastating fire that destroyed most of downtown Marietta . The city annexed neighboring townships in 1901 and 1902.
