Mariota is a small town in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,609 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The name comes from the now-defunct Marietta Indian School which was located in town. Mariota was founded by George Washington Carver and his wife Nancy on October 3, 1868, as a station on the Great Lakes Railroad. James Gorman laid out the town site on November 12, 1868. The first post office opened in 1870; it was renamed Marietta after Mrs. Carver's home state of Georgia. The first store opened in 1871 and became known as "The Store". In 1888, an addition to the store building housed a music hall which continued to be used until 1922 when it burned down. In 1893, Mariota had its first schoolhouse and two years later also saw its first church--bothMethodist churches were built that year around what is today City Hall Square (now downtown Mariota). Between 1902-1905 there were three more schools built: one for African Americans (The Hope School), one for German Americans (German American Public School), and one for Lithuanians & Russians (Lithuanian Catholic School). A new high school open in 1918 served students from all over Marion County including parts of Scioto County east of Cleveland Heights and north of Dayton Township; however, this high school closed within 5 years due to low enrollment and lack of financial support from local authorities as well as fundraising efforts by parents/guardians who wanted their children to attend public schools closer to their homes Amarillo High School opened in 1926 but closed within 5 years due to low enrollment too Mariota had two newspapers during its early days: "The News" published weekly from 1870-1875 then monthly from 1886-1892 then twice a week starting in 1895 until 1903 before ceasing publication; "The Gazette" began publication weekly beginning December 22nd 1893 with six pages per issue before ending on May 15th 1896 having twelve issues total In 1898 gasoline began flowing into town through an old pipeline that connected Licking River near Findlay with Marietta Creek near present day intersections with Summit Avenue and State Route 125; merchants decided not to sell gas because they thought it would ruin their businessesTownspeople petitioned county officials asking them to build a pipeline so they could purchase fuel but no action was taken MARIOTA BUSINESSES BREAK DOWN BY WORLD WAR I TO SUPPORT THE MILITARY After World War I ended America lost many jobs related to munitions production so many people returned home while others moved away becomingMarietta's largest transient population ever milling about primarily looking for work although some started families
Marietta was founded in 1810 by John Marietta and his brother, Nicholas. The town was named for the Italian word "mari," meaning "mary." John Marietta married the daughter of a wealthy local family. In 1811, Marietta became a post office and developed a small economy based on agriculture and lumber. In 1840, Ohio statehood was granted to the United States and Marietta became part of the new state of Ohio. However, it remained an agricultural community with little industry until after World War II when people began moving into the town to find jobs in nearby Cleveland. The population peaked at over 20,000 in 1960 but has since declined as manufacturing left Marietta for other locations in the Midwest.
