The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and public safety services in the Ohio Valley for over 125 years. On December 12, 1914, the first Coast Guardsmen were assigned to Maple Heights, located on the southern tip of Delaware County. The service was originally called the militia and was used to keep watch over shipping in the area. In 1919, a tower was built at Maple Heights to help keep track of vessels approaching from out of state. The tower later served as a base for the Coast Guard's North American Patrol Service. In 1926, a new station was built on Cedar Point Island in Lake Erie near what is now Akron. This station helped control traffic around Cedar Point and provided cover for launches launching supplies into Lake Erie. In 1951, a new station was built at Sandusky Bay just north of Ironton with an additional 400 personnel. This station helped prevent smuggling activities off of Canadian soil and also assisted in search-and-rescue operations during Typhoon Floyd in 1978. On November 5, 1988, President Reagan dedicated the Port Columbus Terminal complex which included a $1 billion renovation project that doubled the size of the facility and added retail space and more than 100 new berths for ships docking at Toledo Harbor. Maple Heights, Ohio is a city located in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 44,591 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Northwest Ohio after Cleveland. Maple Heights was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Hahn and his family as a small community on the Scioto River near what is now downtown Akron. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources; maple syrup was a major export product until the early 20th century. In 1907, Maple Heights became part of the newly formed Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area and began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to other large cities in Northeast Ohio and Cincinnati. By 1920, Maple Heights had reached its peak population with over 100,000 people living in an area that included parts of downtown Akron, Morehead City, and Euclid Avenue north of University Circle. However, during World War II much of Maple Heights was bombed as part of Operation Hastings which destroyed almost all buildings within radius of Point Park Lake Naval Air Station east of town center
The first settlers in Maple Heights, Ohio were James and Jaela McCartney. James was a Scottish immigrant who settled in the area in 1827. He married Jaela, a Native American woman. The McCartneys began farming and trading in the area until they moved to Massillon, Ohio in 1845. There they founded the McConnell family grocery store which continued to operate until 1971. In 1875, John Matson came to Maple Heights from Lima, Ohio and opened a hardware store called the Matson Hardware Store. This business continues to operated today as part of Gilead Sciences Incorporated. The town name originated with John Matson which is derived from Mahoning Valley Township where he located his hardware store.
