It grew rapidly during the 1800s as a result of its location on the newly developed Erie Canal system and its manufacturing base. The town's growth stopped after World War II because of the decline of manufacturing in Ohio. However, since the late 1990s, Mansfield has seen an increase in development due to its proximity to Cleveland and other metropolitan areas.
Mansfield is a city in and the county seat of Mansfield Township, in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Mansfield was founded in 1796 by General David Ogle and named for him. In 1814, it became part of the new state of Ohio. The city was incorporated on December 12, 1836. It was reincorporated as a city on May 12, 1907. On November 3, 1922, it merged with the neighboring town of Woodstock to form one municipality with a total population of 1,243 people. The first settlers to Mansfield were Englishmen who had come overland from Yorkshire in 1796. They built log cabins on an area now called Park Street and started trading goods with other towns in central Ohio. The town site was chosen because it would be easy to build roads and trails because its location near the Scioto River made it convenient for transportation. In 1814, General David Ogle decided to move his command headquarters from Pittsburgh to what is now Mansfield after experiencing problems there with Indian raids and disease outbreaks (the Battle of Fallen Timbers). He believed that this would make it easier for him to control these areas since he could rely less on military forces living close by while they protected their settlements elsewhere in central Ohio. In 1835, when Lawrence Cooley organized the township of Lucas County into which he had been appointed prosecutor general by President Andrew Johnson following his impeachment trial), Mansfield became one of its townships (alongside Cleveland Heights and Cleveland). On December 12, 1836 – two days after being incorporation – Mansfield voted 5-0 to become one day's wide community stretching from Euclid Avenue northward along Muskingum Boulevard eastward until Cedar Street ran south between Wayne Street (now Gaylord Road) and Park Avenue; this community formed what is now known as South Side Heights neighborhood today within blocks of each other dating back more than two centuries! When Chauncey Mifflin organized Woodstock Township adjacent to his own landowning family during the late 1830s – about eleven years before Greenback Party Candidate William Jennings Bryan won an election fought on behalf of rural farmers against corrupt politicians – both municipalities had only 600 residents! Whenwoodstocks merger became effective January 1st 1840 however Woodstock's population reached 2200 by 1870! This growth caused much worry among some trustees who claimed that too many people were moving into Muskoka Township while not enough people were moving out!! However future Mayor John Ahern & City Treasurer Amos Stroud quickly proved those fears unfounded when they actually began building housing developments specifically intended for starter families or others just starting out in their new communities!!! It wasn’t until 1865 when voters passed a resolution urging Governor John Fenton to annex all or parts of Muskingum County including MansFIELD due largely to concerns about cotton production along the Scioto River valley floor - resulting in today’s downtown area becoming reality !!
