It is the seventh-largest city in Cuyahoga County and the second-largest city in Greater Cleveland behind Cleveland. In 1805, Mansfield was the site of John Adams' presidential campaign headquarters. TheAdams family still resides in Mansfield today. The first permanent settler in Mansfield was Joshua Goodrich who arrived on May 9, 1796 from Hartford Connecticut with his family. Goodrich had been a justice of the peace for much of western Pennsylvania before settling hereabouts. Other early settlers included William Haughton (1798), Benjamin Fenton (1800), Isaac Greenwood (1801), Nathaniel Hill (1802), James Aiken (1807), and David Dudley (1811). In 1812, John Morse moved to Mansfield from Steubenville Ohio with his wife Sarah and children Samuel and Rebecca Morse. Josephine Morse immigrated to America with her parents in 1815 and resided here until their death in 1840; she bequeathed $10,000 to charity upon her death each year until her will were probated on December 4th of that year which totaled $166,880USD as of 2019 In 1825–26 one saw “a curious exhibition” of about 100 wagons filled with goods brought over by package trainloads from New York City Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young from Nauvoo Illinois The town started off as a small village named Canandaigua on high ground east of present day Mentor Road/US Route 422 about two miles west of where it now stands A postoffice called Canandaigua was established on November 7th , 1830 under the name Mansfield after General James Winchester who had fought at Battle Of Bunker Hill On July 14th , 1839 local farmers met at what is now First Baptist Church to create a school district that would include present day MansFIELD as well as unincorporated areas including Woodlawn Heights and Whitehall Township On October 10 th 1870 Anthony Wayne became an elector for Union county joining other area towns such as Napoleon Twp., Findlay Twp., Euclid Twp., Lyndhurst Twp., Highland Park Village & North Olmsted Village forming Cleveland Municipal District #1 ; later this area became part of Warren Municipal District #1 . By 1900 there were just 25 residents living inside the limits proposed by the School Board . On April 6 th 1902 voters approved incorporation into Cuyahoga County when all but one township voted against it becoming a borough

It became a city on May 14, 1907. The City of Mansfield lost its charter in 1966 and is now an unincorporated community. Mansfield was originally part of the Northwest Territory when it was organized in 1787. In 1813, John Mansfield platted what would become Mansfield Township on the east side of the Scioto River. On December 12, 1813, he and his family were pioneers who named their new town for themselves after their home town of Manchester, England. The township contained only about sixty acres ( twenty-four hectares). However, over time it grew to include much more land until it had a total area of over two square miles ( foursquare kilometers). In 1907, the city of MansFIELD lost its charter because it did not meet certain requirements set by the state government including having a population greater than one thousand residents within six months of being chartered and providing economic development opportunities to help support that population growth. As a result, Mansfield became an unincorporated community with its own governing body known as the Village Council/Mayor & Board which operate under municipal laws and regulations rather than those set forth by the city government
