Mansfield is a town in Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ottawa County. Mansfield was founded by men from Manchester, England in 1788 as a small settlement on the Scioto River. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1835, the town became a city and it remained so until 1970 when it merged with neighboring Ambler to form Mansfield-Ambler Township. The history of Mansfield can be traced back to early Settlers arriving here around 1800 who were farmers and traders looking for new land to farm or trade on the growing Erie Canal network. One such man was Nicholas Mansfield who came overland from England in 1788 and started a small farming operation along what is now US-2 (the Scioto River). By 1802, mansfield had become an incorporated Village under the name of "Manchester". When the Erie Canal arrived through this area in 1825, business flourished as goods could now be shipped directly to Cincinnati and other destinations without having to go via Pittsburgh or Boston. From here on things grew gradually but surely; within ten years of its establishment manchester had become one of America's largest settlements with over 1,000 residents! In 1830, Manchester was annexed by neighboring Ambler and began rapid growth even further thanks to its connections with both industry and transportation - becoming one of Ambler's premier towns! By 1870 there were over 4500 people living in Manchester proper while annexing adjacent villages along US-2 including: New Castle (1831), West Chester (1835), Fair Oaks (1838), Germantown (1841) & Moreton Heights (1843). With an ever growing population came ever expanding resources which led to increased construction activity throughout these years including: two hotels/motels - First National Bank Hotel & Palace Hotel; three grist mills - Stephenson & Whitney Brothers; four cotton ginners - Covington & Giddings; five banks - First American National Bank; Second American National Bank; Trust Company Of America; Citizens National Bank Of Philadelphia; Union Trust Company Ltd.; two substantial woolen factories – Broadbent Woolen Mills Inc., Brown And Williamson Woolen Mills Inc.; three lumber mills – Alderwood pulp mill #1 operated out of Alderwood Arsenal warehouse building since opening in 1901 until closing down circa 1985 due to arson issues making way for a current day paper mill complex located just off I-670 across from Roanoke Elementary School) Three large retail stores – Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenny’s Department Store (#1 1912 – closed 1990), Kmart Corporation / Pee Weeces Department Store (#2 1954 – closed 1990) While much has changed during these latter decades such as suburbanization severe loss during World War II leading largely to abandonment etc., few would argue that Manchester's economic heyday cannot still be found today if you're willing To search hard enough!
