Macedonia, Ohio was founded in 1817 by John C. Frémont and became a U.S. state in 1821. The city of Macedonia is home to the Cleveland Museum of Art and is also known as the birthplace of General George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The city has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding days. Macedonia was first settled by Native Americans, who were followed by Europeans in the 1800s. In 1817, John C. Frémont discovered land that would become Macedonia after heading west from what is now Colorado Springs, Colorado on his surveyor's map of western United States. After being approved for settlement by the Ulysses S Grant administration, Macedonians began moving into the area in large numbers beginning in 1819. By 1830, there were over 1,500 residents living in Macedonia alone and it had reached its peak population of 3,000 people during the mid-19th century. In 1840, when Ohio became a state following the admission of Missouri into Confederation as part of Kansas Territory (now Oklahoma), Macedonia reverted to Indian ownership with only a few white settlers remaining until 1862 when it was made part of Cleveland Township under English control following their annexation of Canada pursuant to the Oregon Treaty (1846).
