At its inception, the national guard consisted of 8 companies and 2 regiments totaling 100 men. The first unit to be activated was company C from Mansfield Township. The first duty assigned to these new troops was manning the cannons at Mansfield Heights Park during the Civil War. Company C also served in World War I and II as part of the 169th Infantry Regiment which fought in both theaters of war. After World War II ended, company C continued to serve until 1959 when it was disbanded and its members redistributed among other units within the Ohio National Guard. In 1978, company D from Columbiana County became reactivated as part of concurrent activation for brigade level organization within state forces across Ohio. In 1982-1983 Company D deployed along with 3rd Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) from Columbus to Desert Storm in support of Operation Neptune Spear which recovered Kuwaiti oil reserves after Iraqi invasion that began on March 22nd 1988. Today’s Rochester Township native company A is one of two companies present within brigade level organization within state forces in Kasich County; this occurred on December 6th 2016 when company F became reactivated with Headquarters located at Lima Correctional Facility following demobilization from Army Reserve Component service effective September 15th 2015 following 10 years active duty including deployments overseas multiple times (Iraq/Syria/Lebanon). Prior detachments have included: 4th Battalion (Light Infantry), 7th Battalion (Infantry), 9th Battalion (Reserve), 12th Battalion (Justiciar Guards) . At the time, the militia was only 8,000 men strong and there wasn’t enough money to keep all of them active. In response to this problem, Congress created the National Guard Bureau on October 15, 1777. This bureau gave soldiers and officers financial compensation and allowed them to serve without having to wait for their expiration of their enlistment contracts. The first units were called “Volunteer Associations” because they weren’t funded by Congress but were voluntary contributions from individuals. On September 11th, 1780, President George Washington authorized the raising of an army of 10,000 men for service in America’s Revolutionary War. This army became known as the Continental Army and it was made up mostly of volunteers from New England and other Northeastern states. Eventually, all states turned into militias and the National Guard began serving full-time as an arm of state governments throughout America. In 1814, Congress passed a law giving Guardsman access to federal military training facilities so that they could be better equipped for war against Mexico if needed. From then until 1865 when Civil War broke out, Guardsmen served in both Northern ( Union) and Southern ( Confederate) armies as part of separate organizations known as brigades or regiments. During this time period also saw some unique events such as Guardsmen helping overthrow Reconstructionist government in South Carolina after the country had been divided between whites ( Union) and black slaves ( Confederate). After World War II ended, many Guardsmen returned home with various degrees of experience under their belts! Some even started families while still serving in our military! Today there are over 7 million guardsmenserving across our nation! It is amazing how these brave men have helped shape American society through its history!
