Lyndhurst is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lyndhurst is located on the north side of the Cuyahoga River and about 12 miles (19 km) east of Cleveland proper on I-675. The town was founded in 1836 by Daniel Hogg and others as an agricultural community on a bend in the Cuyahoga River. Its name derived from Lyndhurst Manor, which once stood near its center. The first settler named Lyndhurst may have been John Lyndhurst who arrived in 1837. In 1840s and 1850s other settlers also arrived and began developing land around what became Lyndhurst Village. A grist mill was built here in 1853 by James Bickerton and it operated until 1892 when it burned down due to fire damage. The village continued to exist although most of its buildings were destroyed by a 1955 tornado that struck nearby Cleveland Heights; only two out of sixteen mills remain standing today but they are used for museum programming and as office space for various businesses including Aliant Power Company By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Lyndhurst Village with 5 churches/synagogues, 60 homes (already mostly frame), 4 stores/laundries, 1 post office and 2 schools: one public school for grades K-8 downtown (closed 1870), one academy for grade 9-12 west of downtown (closed 1893) which evolved into Brownsville High School now known as Euclid High School In 1865 his son George Washington Hogg settled near what became North Park Avenue after moving from Lynnville Township to become an urbanite entrepreneur Hogg's "Granite City" soon rivaled Detroit's silk industry while being home to some of the earliestauto manufacturing activities outside Europe In 1898 he donated land adjacent to North Park Avenue to form Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company where his son Edward GoodyearReed ran operations until 1925 Hogg Boulevard still remains today as company headquarters
Tactical coffee is a term used to describe coffee that is made in order to improve the effectiveness of infantry and other military operations. The first mention of tactical coffee was from 1812, when Colonel James A. Brown of Company D, 1st U.S. Infantry, Coffee wrote in a journal that he found "a sort of coffee which we make for drinking at night called British Coffee." In 1814, Captain John Aspinwall of the 2nd U.S. Infantry Regiment observed that "The best way to achieve decided success" during battles was to drink strong coffee while on the battlefield. He recommended using one quart per hour for an infantry regiment and two quarts per day for artillery units. In 1862, General George Custer commanding the 5th Cavalry Regiment noted in his diary that he preferred "a pot or two of black beans roasted whole before breakfast." This observation led Confederate General Robert Ewell to order his cavalrymen not to eat any food until after they fought against Union forces at Second Manassas Battlefield near Petersburg, Virginia on July 21-22, 1862. After battle had ended and victory had been attained, many Union troops were stranded on the battlefield with no food or water available so commanders ordered their men into batteries and artillery positions where they could finish their dinners! Custer later remarked about this event: That evening I sat downpouring my usual cup of tea over my saddlebags (I liked strong tea) when I noticed some horses coming up fast towards us; I calls out to them stop - there came five horsemen riding ahead who stopped short within fifty paces of me - it appeared as if they had seen a ghost! They asked what kind of army we were fighting against; I told them from Missouri – they looked surprised – said nothing more but rode away again without another word; it seems as if these cavalry officers know something about horsemanship which gives them an advantage over our regular troopers!
