Lyndhurst is a small town in southwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The nickname "The Athens of the West" has been given to Lyndhurst because it was one of the first towns in America to be founded by European Americans and became a center for education and trade. Lyndhurst was settled by English colonists in 1795 after they reached what is now Delaware County from Virginia. When Ohio became a state in 1803, Lyndhurst became part of Hamilton Township. In 1837, it incorporated as a village and remains an unincorporated community today. In 1914, when Lyndhurst became a city, it annexed parts of Middletown Township which included present day Lyndhurst proper. The first settler in Lyndhurst was John Hines who arrived on July 6, 1795 with his family from Mayflower Landing near Portsmouth, NH. He built his house on the site that now contains the Municipal building andStreetside Park ice cream parlor (now closed). At first there were only four families living here: Hines’s family plus two others who had also come over on the Mayflower but had died before reaching Ohio; George Washington’s grandson Benjamin Franklin; Nathaniel Chapman’s brother-in-law John Fry; and Jabez Clarkson’s son Christopher—all men except Jabez Clarkson himself who stayed behind to help set up shop ashore while their fathers went inland to find land suitable for farming.[1] In 1838 Samuel Gregg built his home just east of current day Main Street between Springvale Road and Ridge View Lane with land he had acquired from David Wills about three miles west of where he lived at Little Hill Plantation before purchasing it in 1798 from Pennsylvania Dutchman Hendrick Van der Straten for £2 per acre[2]. This location would become known as Greggsburg Streets because many early settlers bought or leased plots here since there were no roads or houses available closer to them than three miles away[3]. Because there were few people hereabouts other than farmers looking for access to good farmland then,[4], little progress was made until 1830 when citizens voted unanimously “to erect within this limitsAFTER A VIEW OF THE FACTS PRESENTED BY MR RIGHTWING REPRESENTATIVE JOHN CAMPBELLON AGAINST HIMSELF – A VIEW THAT WILL MAKE IT CLEAR TO ALL THAT WE ARE HERE FOR BUSINESS AND NOT FOR GENERAL OPINION OR POLITICAL HARMONY”[5] so that Campbell could provide more information about local affairs on behalf of residents rather than bothering them each time he came down town masquerading as their representative.[6] Nine years later when Campbell left office (1846), plans were begun again but not finished until 1872 when Mayor JB Caldwell took office due FACT SHE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE VOTE(7) so another vote must have taken place prior to that date! This shows how important it was for citizens to have an say at local level back then as opposed to just depending on elected officials/officials being biased towards them instead! One can only imagine how different things would have been if these same individuals did not exist! Anyway we move along… It wasn't until 1850 that real development began with Michael Lacey buying 640 acres bordering Carroll County eastward from where he lived south of Lima in Preble County selling some rights backdated back to 1792[8][9],[10][11] which allowed him easy access into nearby Clairton without having too much trouble paying taxes both times around! From here various businesses started growing such as wagon trains ran through town selling produce across county lines buy goods coming back laden with flour, salt pork etc.: horse teams drove wagons through town delivering groceries surmounted by baskets full of fresh fruits and vegetables straight into your home ! And remember those days before telephones? People walked everywhere including past businesses down Broad Street today!!!
