Lyndhurst is a town in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,492 at the 2010 census. Lyndhurst is located on the southern edge of Lorain County and is bordered by Holmes Township to the east, Portsmouth Township to the west, and Northfield Township to the north. The town was founded in 1824 when part of what are now Holmes and Portsmouth townships were divided off from neighboring Lyndhurst township. The first settler in Lyndhurst was John Cook. Cook's cabin still stands near where he built it. In 1827, General John Fenton ordered James Caldwell to begin construction on a road from Cincinnati through Cleveland to Detroit. Caldwell completed the road in 1830 but failed to pay Fenton for it. Fenton took Caldwell's land and divided it among his friends. In 1839, parts of Holmes and Dover townships were combined with Lyndhurst so that they could form a new township called "Lyndhurst." In 1861, part of Northfield Township was added to Lyndhurst as well; this addition caused the population of Lyndhurst to grow rapidly because much of that territory had been rural for centuries before becoming incorporated into larger municipalities. In 1870-71, George Prentice developed an innovative corn sugar refinery in nearby Lawrenceburg which became known as "Prentice's Corn Mill." This mill processed corn sugar until 1907 when it closed due to financial difficulties; however its impact on Lyndhurst can be seen throughout its history both within and beyond town limits. Lyndhurst also became home during World War II to two groups of workers who helped produce munitions for American forces: Theglyst Machinery Company (later renamed Wirtz Machine & Gear) used portions of Main Street between Clairmont Road and Flourtown Road while Sinter Machine Shop operated off Maple Avenue opposite Main Street between Clinton Drive and Ives Avenue; these companies produced more than 2 million pieces of machinery including more than 1 million machines made specifically for war production .
