Lyndhurst, Ohio is a small town located in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Lyndhurst were farmers who came to the area in the late 1800s. They started a farm and grew corn, beans, peas and cotton. In 1906, they founded the Lyndhurst-Wright Machine Shop which still operates today as a family-owned business. Lyndhurst also has its own post office which opened in 1892. In 1924, the town name was changed from Hocking to Lyndhurst after Edwin A. Lyndhurst II who served as mayor of Dayton from 1922 to 1924 and then as governor of Ohio from 1926 to 1929. The economy of Lyndhurst is based on agriculture with some manufacturing operations being conducted such as chemical processing plants and binders for paper products. There are also a few small businesses that offer services including antique retailing and catering services. The population has shrunk somewhat since 2000 when it peaked at 1,711 residents but continues to grow rapidly due to births and deaths within the community itself as well as nearby suburbs that have annexed into Lindhurg
Lyndhurst was founded in 1810 and became a town in 1838. The first settler, Nicholas Armitage, arrived in 1809. He built the first home on what is now Lyndhurst Heights. In 1830, Isaac Sibley settled here and built the first salt mine on the hill. In 1860, John Prentice founded Prentice Paper Co. here and many other companies followed over the years. The population of Lyndhurst peaked at around 15,000 in 1920 but declined to 10,000 by 1960.
