The name " Lyndhurst" derived from land grant given to him by James Caldwell for $2,500 in 1801. After years of growth and development as a small frontier community, Lyndhurst reached its peak during the late 19th century with an increase in population to over 11,000 people by 1915. During this time it became known as one of America's leading steel towns due to its production of cars and other auto parts. However, during World War I and II Lyndhurst experienced significant economic decline which has left it struggling since then; however recent efforts have led to some progress including the reopening of several businesses within the past few years. In spite of these struggles, Lyndhurst remains a highly vibrant community with strong social traditions that continue today; one such tradition is its annual Fourth of July parade which draws vast crowds along Center Street every year
Lyndhurst was founded in 1795 by two men, John and Daniel Lyndhurst. The Lyndhursts were the first white settlers in what is now Ohio. They built a log cabin on a hilltop and named their settlement after themselves, Lyndhurst Hill. In 1814, they moved to what is now Dayton. In 1870, the Lyndhurst Manufacturing Company was founded in Dayton by Daniel Lyndhurst and his brother John. The company made agricultural products such as flour, cornmeal, cheese, eggs and bacon. It also manufactured pianos and other musical instruments. The Lyndhurst Manufacturing Company closed its doors in the 1920s. However, it left an enduring legacy in Dayton with its contributions to the city’s history and economy.
