Lorain is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lorain County. The population was 38,787 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Lorain County by population. It is part of the Cleveland–Marshall metropolitan area and is home to Case Western Reserve University, one of North America's largest universities. Lorain was founded on November 10, 1825 as a small village named Biglerstown by John Bigler and his family. The first post office in Lorain was established on December 1, 1827. The town received its charter from the Ohio General Assembly on May 25, 1830; it grew rapidly with new construction over the next few decades including a courthouse and three churches. In 1836, Lighthouse Park was donated to Lorain by Pierre Bourseaux for use as a public park; it became an important mix of open land used for agriculture and pleasure resort until bequeathing it to Case Western Reserve University in 1907. By 1840, Little Miami River had been developed into what is now downtown Lorain with five brick blocks built between that year and 1845 as part of what would become known as "the town blocks". In 1850-1851, there were clashes between settlers who wanted closer access to transportation via wagon road (the precursor to today's Interstate highway system) and those who wished for more forested properties along the river bank (). A group led by Ebenezer Cobb formed a committee in early 1851 to study ways to improve transportation options within or beyond creation of township boundaries (). After twenty months of work they presented their report ""On Improving Means For Landing Thereon"", which recommended creating two townships within Lorain Township: One should have access only through water while another should have access both ways (. . .) They also proposed developing additional tracts eastward onto Little Miami River (now Walker Road) towards Cleveland so that shipment could be made directly from Toledo rather than having goods transported upriver then barged down

The first permanent settler in what is now Lorain County was John Lennon, who arrived in 1812 and claimed land near present-day Copley Street and Maple Street. In 1814, George Stephenson built the first locomotive on the Ohio River at present day Union Station. In 1816, John Paulding established a salt works in what is now northwest Lorain Township. The town of Lorain was founded by James Aitken in 1827 as a way to get goods to Cleveland faster because boats had to travel around Lake Erie then through the canals to get to the city. From 1830 until 1870, much of what is now west suburban Cleveland was part of Lorain County; it included all or part of Battle Creek (now an unincorporated community), Arlington Heights (now an unincorporated community), Midland Park (now an unincorporated community), Strongsville (now an unincorporated community), Canfield (now an unincorporated village), Euclid Heights (now part of Cleveland Heights) and parts of Ashtabula and Mentor townships. After annexation by Cleveland in 1907, much of west suburban Cleveland became part of Lakewood Township but east suburban Cleveland remained within Lorrain County until 1965 when it became its own separate municipality. during this time there were also several towns located within current-day Warren Township - Darien Heights (partly within Ashtabula Township before its annexation into Warren Township proper), Highland Heights/Houston Heights/Mentor Hills/Bellevue Hill Village(allwithin Mentor Township before its annexation intoWarren township proper)
