Lima is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Lima is one of twelve towns in Cuyahoga County and is part of the Cleveland–Akron metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Lima was Nicholas Manthei, who arrived here in 1814 from Switzerland. He started a gristmill and became one of the early farmers in this region. In 1827, John Hennigan founded Lima Institute, which offered religious education to young men and women from Western Reserve counties around Northeast Ohio. The institute continued until it closed its doors in 1912. In 1836, Major General Elijah Bickford erected a stockade along the Scioto River for guards against Native Americans who had recently raids into central Ohio during the 1840s buffalo hunt campaign led by American Indian agent James Krieger. This fortification served as an important security checkpoint until it was destroyed by fire in 1845; however, it left an lasting legacy on Lima as it is still known as "Bickford's Fort". In 1847, Jervis Simpson opened up his first tannery on State Road 4 near where he now lives and began producing leather goods for export to England and elsewhere. A few years later he developed a more significant business venture when he opened up Watkins’ Mills northeast of town to process agricultural commodities such as flour and beans that were brought downriver by steamboats into Cleveland before being distributed through local stores across Greater Cleveland..
