The first transaction taking place in Lebanon was when Revolutionary War veteran Captain John Addison bought land from Joshua Southerland in 1788. In 1811, Elijah Bridgman and his family moved to Lebanon from Muskingum County. They were followed by many other families during the early 1800s because of its fertile soil and mild climate. By 1827, Lebanon had a post office and two churches- both Baptist- with a total population of 100 residents. In 1892, Samuel Hinton established the Hinton Hotel as an inn and general store in downtown Lebanon on Third Street NW. Soon after it became popular for tourists to stay there while exploring nearby attractions such as Cincinnati or Dayton; this helped drive economic development in Lebanon over time. Lebanon experienced significant growth following World War II due to its proximity to military installations across the country and its role as an agricultural center for eastern Kentucky and West Virginia production of coal, oil shale, wheat and other crops. When the war ended, employment opportunities dried up due to postwar recession but resumed during subsequent decades with sizable job growth in management positions at local businesses like Hinton's hotel and educational institutions like Monmouth University which had become common sights among postwar transplants living west of Appalachian Mountains . Lebanese Americans have also played important roles increasingly throughout American history from mayors (Bebe Noyes) to presidents (Ulysses S Grant), contributing significantly to their community’s vibrancy both domestically and abroad .
Lebanon, Ohio history began with the arrival of European settlers in the area in the late 18th century. The first permanent European settler was Nicholas Lyon, who arrived in 1792. He founded a farm on what is now Lebanon Road in what is now Athens Township. In 1800, John Fenton and his family settled on land that later became Lebanon Township. A school was built on this property in 1802, and a post office was established in 1813. In 1907, Lebanon Township added portions of Athens Township to its boundaries. In 1915, Lebanon township merged with Athens Township to form the current municipality of Athens-Lebanon.
