Lebanon, Ohio (formerly called Lebanon, Pennsylvania) is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1810 and named for the biblical city of Beirut. The first settler in what would become Lebanon was Jacob Schellenberg, who arrived in 1813. He and his family built a log cabin on the east side of the Scioto River. In 1818, they moved to a more permanent location on what is now State Route 6 near present-day Lebanon Elementary School. In 1830, they erected a frame house which served as their home until 1880 when it burned down due to an accidental fire. In 1837, John Dvorak purchased land northwest of Lebanon for $600 from Nicholas Boudreau and erected a small log cabin known as Dvorak's Center about two miles west of present-day Lebanon High School. Dvorak became one of the early settlers in what would become Lebanon and operated a store there until his death in 1865. His son Maurice also started a store there during this time period before moving it across the river to what is now State Route 234 near Union Township in 1840 under the name "Maurice's Store." He continued operation until his death seven years later. In 1839, Ezekiel Gossage purchased land southeast of Lebanon from Nicholas Boudreau for $1 cash and began farming it with his brother David Gossage following soon after. They raised chickens and pigs on their new property until 1870 when they bought another piece of land adjacent to their original farmstead which they used as pastureland for their cows and pigs until 1930 when they sold all their land to George Fenton who began grazing sheep on it today. From 1840 through 1860*, Samuel Morse* conducted experiments with electricity at Silliman College(*), located just south of Lebanon between Harrisonburg Road (*) andState Route 234(*). This event helped lay the groundwork for electric power generation within Medina County that would take place over several decades.* Lebanon post office opened November 16th 1830* from Newark (now Delaware), New Jersey via Cincinnati with mail being sent by horseback from Lancaster via Ohiopyle Creek . From 1861-1893 *the village had no mail service* because postal officials thought that people were too busy Shopping For Mail To Send Letters! A revival campaign led by Mrs Stroud (& others*) resulted In The Opening Of A Post Office On October 2nd 1893 With American Express As First Customer! Mrs Stroud Is buried At Springdale Cemetery Nearby

In 1847, Lebanon became a village under the control of the United States government. It was renamed Lebanon after Lewis G. Woodruff, an American politician who served as the 25th Governor of Ohio from 1851 to 1863.
