Lebanon, Ohio is a small town located in the southern portion of the state of Ohio. It was founded by General Elijah D. Lee in 1814 as a trading post on the Monongahela River. After serving as a military garrison for three years, it became the county seat of Lebanon Township in 1827. The town was renamed Lebanon in 1868 after the capital of Beirut, Syria. As an agricultural center, Lebanon supported local industries until World War II when its economy shifted to entertainment and tourism. In 1950, it became part of the newly created Columbus metropolitan area and has since experienced rapid growth with population growth (from 10,000 to 30,000 over the past decade) and development in new businesses and infrastructure. The current mayor is Donnie Crouse and there are four wards that make up portions of Lebanon Township: Carthage Heights (northwest), Westfield (southeast), Beech Grove (southwest), and New Edinburgh (southwest).
The first European to visit Lebanon was Étienne de Montresor, who visited in 1598. The first permanent European settlement in Lebanon was made by the Dutch in 1605.
