Lancaster, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lancaster County. The population was 20,806 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th-largest city in Greater Cleveland. It is also home to The University of Akron and Case Western Reserve University. The name Lancaster comes from English settlers who named their town after their hometown of Lancaster, England. The first residents of what is now Lancaster were Native American traders and missionaries who traveled through the area during the 1770s on their way to evangelize other tribes in central Ohio. A post office called Lancaster was established in 1813, and growth began to slow until 1824 when a railroad built through the area made goods available for local merchants more easily than traveling by wagon train or boat across Lake Erie. In 1827, General John Forbes appointed George Stephenson as engineer for building a new alignment of the Erie Canal which would connect Cleveland with Buffalo, New York via Pittsburgh; this project became known as The Great Lakes Ship Canal Project and was completed in 1830. In 1840, Governor David Dennison designated land north of town along US Route 10 as part of township No. 7 North; this township included present-day Lancaster Township and much of Delaware Township east thereof (now Defiance Township). In 1846, when township No 9 was created from parts of former townships Nos 5 & 6 North, part including present-day Lancaster Township lay within that new township boundaries; thus all current township boundaries stem from these two original townships only - except for those formed by adding portions of existing townships over time such as Defiance Township which goes back to 1800 when its boundaries were largely unaltered). Lancaster's rapid growth following its incorporation as a village occurred due to numerous factors including its location atop an important natural resources feeder neck connecting three major cities - Cleveland, Buffalo, and Rochester – plus several smaller ones; access to transportation improved with construction on both railways; business opportunities resulting from increasing trade opportunities with nearby cities along Lake Erieurging development near downtown – especially given that many areas now surrounding downtown are still agricultural or rural; affordability being aided by low real estate taxes throughout most decades starting around World War II thanks to generous taxation policies enacted by then-Governor James Kossuth
