The Lakewood National Guard was first organized on November 10, 1907. The organization was made up of Reservists from the city of Cleveland and other surrounding towns. The Guard served as a militia unit until 1938. In 1938, the Guard was redesignated the Ohio Army National Guard and it continued to serve as such until 1990. During that time, the Guard also served in numerous deployments to various parts of the world including Panama Canal Zone and Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Since 1990, the Ohio Army National Guard has been headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. It is composed of both Regular and Reserve Component units with a total strength of over 146,000 soldiers and airmen. Additionally, there are more than 100 civilian contractor employees who provide support to the Guardsman on a day-to-day basis. The history of national guard gift giving begins with World War I when many men from Cleveland volunteered their services to fight in that conflict. After they were discharged from service, many men decided to donate their old military uniforms or equipment to be used by local organizations such as the Cleveland National Military Park or First Battalion/Fourth Regiment Infantry (later renamed Cleveland Volunteer Firefighters) which had been disbanded after World War I ended. The Lakewood National Guard was originally organized on November 8, 1907 as the 9th Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The battalion was redesignated on December 1, 1907 as the 3rd Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and then on October 15, 1912 as the 11th Battalion (Ohio). On July 1, 1916 the battalion was again redesignated as the 14th Battalion (Ohio) and served with distinction in World War I. On September 17, 1921 the battalion changed its name to the 4th Brigade (Volunteer) of the National Guard of Ohio and it served honorably through World War II. The brigade was disbanded on October 5, 1946.
Lakewood is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,811. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Lakewood was George Washington Smith and his family who arrived in 1796 from Virginia. They named their land "Lakwood" after a large wood near their home in Alexandria, Virginia which they had seen while traveling through that region. The name stuck and today's Lakewood is actually just southwest of where George Washington Smith's original farmstead stood - but it served as the namesake for much of what still exists thereabouts including parts of Euclid Heights to the north and west and Tremont Avenue to the east (and beyond). In 1802, James Caldwell bought 2 square miles (4 km²) from George Washington Smith for $100 which he used as his own private plantation until his death in 1827. After Caldwell's death, most of what became present-day Lakewood was acquired by John Dennison from Nicholas Mynors over several years starting around 1828-30 due to various landowning families' investments therein – culminating with Dennison's purchase of nearly all present day Garfield Heights on May 1, 1840 from Abram Miller for $2,500 cashmere millinery store #1 & #2 [10]. This made Lakewood one of America's earliest planned towns – despite having no inhabitants at first! Dennison greatly improved upon Caldwell's original plan by constructing a series of three interconnected wooden plank buildings known as The Three Cs:chalet House (now Garfield Heights Town Hall), Commercial Block (later United States Post Office), and School House (now Unity Baptist Church). These buildings were completed between 1840-43 by local carpenter/mason Lewis O’Brien under guidance and supervision of architect Ebenezer Howard during an administrative flood event that destroyed most other contemporary structures within sight or reach along both banks of the Scioto River due to overflowing rains caused by then newly formed Hurricane Andrew two weeks prior! Despite being largely dismantled following Andrew’s passage through Harrisonburg Township on September 14th less than two months later – The Three Cs remain extant as well as many minor associated structures such as Police Station#1 still standing today within walking distance or driveability even though now coveredtered inside & out with asphalt/concrete surfaces; firehouse #1 remains operational (& fully staffed) without any major damage since 1992!] In 1836–37 when Ohio began admitting black citizens - primarily via free African American school enrollment rates set forth by General David Blount - much discussion took place about whether or not to annex either Delaware County or West Chester County because thosecounties would have been home to more black people than either Lakeshore Township or Stratholme Township! Ultimately it was decided that Lakeshore would be annexed into Cleveland proper due mostly to political pressure exerted by then Mayor John Pemberton along with then Treasurer William McKinney! However annexation did not happen until 1860 when Lancaster County was carved off from Cleveland also due largely to pressure from Pemberton!! When Plainfield became an incorporated village on April 14th 1870 pursuant to an ordinance passed by commissioners appointed thereto elections were held on November 3rd for village trusteeships with valuationsrangingfrom$3 per month ($40 total at this time) up TO $50 per year ($240 total at this time!) however only six trustees were elected resulting in Village government consisting essentially onlyof a select fewelected officials!!! Five years later another election resultedinthe formationof Village Board member composition involving 36 trustees makingupan aggregate OF 288 votes!!!!! Lakewood is a community in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were three families who settled there in 1837. They named their community after a small body of water near by – Lakewood Creek. The first school in town was built on the same site as the present day library and gymnasium in 1846. One of the earliest businesses located within town limits was an Odd Fellows Lodge which functioned as a grocery store and post office from 1855 to 1865. In 1881, residents voted to incorporate as a village and name it Lakewood Village. This decision led to various annexation opportunities over ensuing years until it reached its current boundaries with the addition of parts of neighboring townships in 1922 In 1931, the village adopted its current name - Lakewood Township - reflecting its growth since incorporation into township form fourteen years earlier In 1951, when Summit County became one state entity, all villages within it were merged into one township so that they could share resources more evenly including services like fire protection and public works In 1957, when new boundaries were created for Summit County following countywide voting among citizens on proposed changes thereto; Lakewood Township continued to be included within that newly formed county while other villages (such as Mayfield) transferred into neighboring counties When Ohio exited federal government service and reverted back to state government control on January 1st 1999; all villages within Summit County were re- annexed back into township form once again making Lakeshore Township one large municipality once again
