Lakewood is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Otterbein Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Lakewood was Nicholas Niles in 1814. Other early pioneers included John McCracken and George Stephenson. In 1832, Alexander Henderson bought of land in what would eventually become Lakewood from Nicholas Niles for $2 per acre. By 1840, Henderson had developed a small community around his home on Capitol Hill Road. By 1850, there were 10 dwellings and three businesses in the community of 1,600 people. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of central Ohio fell to Confederate forces under General Ulysses S Grant while Lakewood sided with Union forces under General Philip Sheridan. It wasn't until 1868 that construction began on the first local schoolhouse - which was dedicated by Mayor James Auld on November 6th that year. The first teacher taught in what is now the school district's old gymnasium until 1874 when Drury Middle School opened its doors to students grades one through twelve

One notable resident during this time was Abram Hewitt who built Hewitt House in 1892 as a donation to the townspeople in memory of his father who had died five years earlier while serving as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War at Fort Sumter. Hewitt also donated land for local schools and churches including First Methodist Church which stands today on Elm Street between Euclid Avenue and Main Street across from Cleveland State University; Wright Chapel located on Euclid Avenue between Carnegie Boulevard (now I-675) and High Street; Greene Chapel located at 4th & Lakeshore Drive south of Third Street; Parkland Baptist Church located at 6th & Erie Streets west of Third Street; Stroud Baptist Church located at 5th & Madison Streets south of Third Street; First Presbyterian Church located on Northgate Boulevard north of Euclid Avenue east off Interstate675 near International Airport; Union Gospel Mission School which opened its doors in 1923 on Clinton Road east off I-675 outside Cleveland Hopkins International Airport now known as Akron Children’s Hospital As early as 1818 a post office called Waterloo had been established about three miles northeast by the mouth of Little Cuyahoga River opposite wherepresent day Toledo now sits Removal operations began within days after Indian Wars that ended with Treaty #5 signed September 11, 1825 by President James Krieger $4 million dollars worth OF goods taken captive along with 350 warriors including Chief Muscogee Joseph O'Hara ceded to US military under General Anthony Wayne Settlement started by David Wilcox saw over 1000 people arrive January 1st 1830 when boats arrived from Philadelphia via Portage Bayou By 1850 there were 10 businesses with 100 residents In October 1860 over 1000 people had come to settlement when schooner MV Mayflower arrived bearing news concerning civil war efforts upriver
