The first people to live in what is now Lakewood originated from Sandusky, Ohio. They were a band of Watauga Indians who had migrated there from Kentucky during the 17th century. In 1801, they founded the city of Cleveland on land that they acquired from John Cushman. The city grew quickly and by 1814 it had become an important port and commercial center on the Great Lakes.
