Lakewood is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, situated on the southern shore of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 25,567 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to explore what would become Lakewood were French fur traders and missionaries in the late 17th century who trekked upriver from Montreal looking for new land to colonize. In 1698 by order of General marketplace John Moncrieff, a detachment of British troops caused an Indian massacre west of present-day downtown Lakewood (now known as Newburgh). In 1803 when Ohio became a U.S. state, it included all of modern-day Cleveland and much of what would become Akron and Middletown; this area now includes most of downtown Cleveland as well as parts of Akron and Middletown proper In 1806 George Washington sent MajorGeneral Anthony Wayne through Canton with orders to explore western Territory pending its admission into the Union as part Southeastern Ohio until Native American tribal claims could be resolved. Wayne discovered that there was no water source for Indians east of the Cuyahoga River so he returned without further exploration in 1807 but left emblems commemorating his journey at various points along his route including one at present day's Civic Center Park along Euclid Avenue in Cleveland Heights In 1810 Samuel Foote traveled downriver from Cincinnati viapresent-day Toledo and found thatisner potential near where Wacoohatchee Creek flows into the Cuyahaga today In 1812 three brothers founded the town called Clintonville on land northwest corner High Street and Ottawa Road now occupied bythe University Hospitals campus across Indersel Parkway from which it took its name The town prospered due to trade with other villages upstream including Aliquippa, Sandusky and Mansfield By 1830 Clintonville had a schoolhouse, two stores, five families residing in ten houses thenceforth identified as "The First Ten", six blacksmiths, four farmers subsistence crops—corn/maize/beans—and three German Lutheran immigrants living onland between High Street eastward to Prospect Avenue then southwesterly to Ontario Road before turning northwest onto Clinton Avenue pasttoday's routing for Mayfair Drive actually paralleling Erie Canal Towardwhat would become Detroit Lakes later that year . That same year another German immigrant family established Grosse Pointe about SW cornerHigh Streetand Lyndhurst Rd current routing for State Route 8 (now US 10) during early pioneer days when commerce was developed through river travel only
Lakewood was founded in 1824 as a small, wetland farming community on the Scioto River. The area around Lakewood grew rapidly as a result of its natural resources, and by 1830 it had become an important commercial center with a mill and blacksmith shop. In 1844, the first post office was established in Lakewood, and by 1870 it had become an important town with a population of about 350. In 1865, the first railroad arrived in Lakewood and helped to impetus growth within the community. By 1925, Lakewood had reached its peak as a commercial and residential center with over 1,000 residents. However, during World War II the city experienced significant damage from bombing raids by the United States Army Air Forces (AAF). As a result of this damage, lakewood declined after 1945 and only regained some of its former prosperity through various tourism initiatives.
