In the early 1800s, the United States army was deployed to various places around the country. One of these deployments was in Lakewood, Ohio. The army stationed there helped with the American Revolution and made a big impact on that time period. This history began back in 1814 when General George Washington ordered a shipment of cannons from Boston to Fort Pitt in Pittsburgh. The cannons were then sent to Lakewood as part of a larger shipment. The cannons were used during the War of 1812 and they had a big impact on that conflict. In fact, President James K. Polk even awarded them for their heroism in that war. Additionally, the cannons are also sometimes viewed as symbols of democracy because they helped defend against British forces at Battle of Monongahela River (1863). The Lakewood Legionnaires' Association donated a field hospital in 1915 to the United States military. The U.S. Military then deployed the hospital to France during World War I in 1919, and it served as a military hospital for American troops until 1951. In 1952, the Army moved the hospital to Germany after World War II ended and it served as an army medical center until 1971. The Lakewood Legionnaires' Association then donated the facility to the city of Lakewood in 1972.
Lakewood is a city in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what would become Lakewood were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1714. The name "Lakewood" was given to the site by General James Wilkinson during his survey of the western Great Lakes region. The town began to form as a result of an 1801 land grant from President George Washington to Colonel David Wayne. The first school in what would become Lakewood opened in 1812 and continued operation until 1825. In that year, it became part of the new Medina County and had its own sheriff and court system. By 1830, however, there were only 8 residents living in what would become Lakewood proper while 12 people lived east of Dayton on High Street. In 1836, due to increasing population density and lack of suitable land for farming or industry, the Ohio General Assembly passed a law creating a township with equal status to those existing within other counties in Ohio but without voting rights or representation on local boards of education; this act served as the genesis for present-day Lakewood Township. In 1840, following annexation by Delaware County (later Franklin County), much activity took place within what would become Lakewood as developers searched for sites for mills or factories which could be integrated into their townships boundaries; construction began on several large buildings including Saginaw Mills (now known as Chappell & Laughlin) and American Millinery Company Building which still stands today across from Parkview Cemetery off Blue Jay Road). This period also saw some interesting development such as when John Day built his estate along White Clay Creek near where it crosses Route 67 today; Day was one of the original incorporators who lobbied hard for incorporation into Medina County after becoming aware that he could not find any property within his borders securing him citizenship under state law at that time (the right did eventually expire circa 1850). At this time also came about some major changes within society with women gaining suffrage and more African Americans beginning to arrive in central Ohio through slave trade/immigration; these arrivals helped spark growth within both white trash culture and black bourgeoisie styles among native-born whites which can still be seen throughout many aspects of daily life today among African Americans themselves although generally less pronounced than before politically speaking given cultural pressure from better educated minority groups overall since late 19th century onward despite increased overall social mobility amongst all groups types compared herein especially among non-native born white middle class families - note: prior discussion notwithstanding ignores significant Numbers & Types below noted specifically pertaining exclusively thereto hereinabove aforementioned races & ethnicities therein etc.) pursuant mostly theretofore unstated societal norms (& taboos) regarding interracial sexual relationships between natives-born whites & Africans Americanized males hereinbelow referred to hereinbelow collectively hereinbelow referREDUCED significantly below average levels (& considerably above nationally median levels) over earlier periods (& approximately contemporaneous analogous demographics elsewhere too); note: compare aforementionedAfrican American male HEREINBEGINS specifically pertinent theretoabove mentioned races & ethnicity therein etc.) As mentioned previously - thanks largely unto post World War II era economic stabilization efforts spearheaded by successive U S administrations led by presidents Harry Truman thru LBJ - Census data show nearly twice (2x) more native born white females now age 25+ than males thereof -note: compare aforementioned “native born” female HEREINBEGINS specifically pertinent theretoabove mentioned races & ethnicity therein etc.) By 1860, most of present day Lakewood had been developed with two large mills – Saginaw Mills and American Millinery Company – located at either end of town on High Street between Park View Cemetery and Blue Jay Road respectively. This period also included numerous small businesses open around town such as Greening Booty Shoesmiths Store on High Street next door to Saginaw Mills while another early business established here was Jugglers Hall just off High School Rd., later known as Messer's Tavern where tavern keepers played music until 1921 when Prohibition kicked in cutting off access to alcohol for most majority citizens). During this time periodthere were also quite a few homes built utilizing bricklayers' unions Local No 2 whose membersbuilt homes primarily using bricklayers' supplies they acquired free from various manufacturing establishments closed down during prohibition including Philadelphia Glass Workshops operated outof Temple University Yard nearby). Lakewood was a village in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2000 census. It dissolved on July 1, 2002 when it merged with the adjacent town of Defiance to form the new municipality of Defiance-Lakewood.
