This Request For Proposal (RFP) led directlyto Lockheed Martin becoming oneofthe largest contractors ever hired by the United States government! In 1941, General George Patton was sent into Germany as commanderofthe Third Army Expeditionary Force (AEF). His goal was twofold: To liberate Nazi concentration camps andTo destroy German infrastructure so that Allied forces could move unimpeded into France . While his troops travelled throughout Germany , Patton observed firsthand how war was wagedand came away impressed with how technology could change warfare at any given moment . He believed that this technology should be availableto everyone who wanted it, not just select few who received undue advantages due to political or financial reasons . This philosophywould later be implemented by General John Eisenhower during World War II as he became supreme commanderof Allied Forces Europe (AEF). The Air Force gift history in Lakewood, Ohio goes back to 1951. In that year, the Air Force stationed a squadron of F-86 Sabres at the former Kirtland AFB in Lakewood. The squadron operated out of the hangar there for many years until it was decommissioned in 1983. However, the plane's parts and equipment were not auctioned off but instead given away to local veterans groups. In 1990, another squadron of F-86 Sabres arrived at Kirtland AFB from Whiteman AFB in Missouri. This squadrons operated from the same hangar as the first squadron and used its parts and equipment to reconstruct an old F-104 Starfighter that had been lost during Operation Desert Storm. The team managed to restore the fighter to flying condition and flew it around town before exhibitions with local dignitaries. It was also announced by then- USAF Chief of Staff General Michael Hayden that this particular restoration would be kept as a historical relic at Kirtland AFB until 2021 when it would be moved permanently to Whiteman AFB where it will now enjoy continued restoration and display.
