The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History in Lakewood, Ohio began in 1994. The USAF presence in the area has grown over time and today the USAF Ninth Air Force is responsible for deployment of more than 1,100 airmen and civilians to support local air forces through a variety of activities. The USAF Deployed Gift History Program helps promote good will among military members and their families by bringing together service members from around the world who are stationed in our region. Our program allows people to show appreciation for our country’s military by gifting items such as uniforms, equipment, or books. Today, the USAF Ninth Air Force is responsible for deploying gift history items to units and installations throughout southeastern Ohio and southwestern Indiana. On Dec. 5, 1941, the United States military deployed the "Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise" to serve as a support vessel for the air force in World War II. The gift history of this ship began on that day when it was first assigned to the air force's task force located off Normandy, France. This task force was responsible for providing combat air support during Operation Overlord, the First World War-era offensive against Nazi Germany and its allies. The carrier remained in service with the United States military throughout World War II and continued to provide important support for Allied troops until she was decommissioned in 1946. After her retirement from service, she served as a museum ship in Lakewood, Ohio until her destruction by fire in 1987. In its time as a gift history of this ship, the airforce's deployment of Enterprise has been commemorated by various events and celebrations occurring at various locations throughout America and Europe.
Lakewood is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 54,924 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cuyahoga County after Cleveland. The area that now makes up Lakewood was first settled by American Indians in the 1790s. The village of Westlake was founded about 1800 by Revolutionary War veterans and their families who were driven out of their homes on the Scioto River by British forces. In 1814, the new state of Ohio gained independence from Great Britain and incorporated as a town; Lakewood became its first municipality. In 1837, when Ohio became a state with its own government, it passed an act annexing part of Cuyahoga County to become the City of Cleveland; Lakewood remained within Cuyahoga County until it joined Cleveland in 1907. Lakewood, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is located in Summit County, and has a population of 23,903 as of the 2010 census. The name "Lakewood" was derived from the Potawatomi word "lakota," meaning "a large body of water." The first settler in what would become Lakewood was Solomon Jameson, who arrived in 1814. By 1825, there were 10 residents living in what would become Lakewood Township. The first school was built in 1828 and it served students until 1840 when a new school was built on High Street by the trustees of Washington Township. In 1868, Licking Township formed from parts of Summit and Ottawa counties and incorporated as a village under the name of Lakewood Village. In 1907, part of Akron became annexed into Lakewood Village and with that annexation came an influx of people who desired to live close to their jobs at factories or businesses within Akron's boundaries. This led to development along Center Avenue which now includes numerous shops and restaurants as well as several apartment buildings dating back to the early 1900s

It became an important center for trade and commerce, and its residents developed strong political connections within Ohio's growing Republican Party. In addition, they helped to build up Lakewood's infrastructure, including its own schools and churches. Over time, Lakewood grew into one of Ohio's leading communities – both economically and politically – until it eventually eclipsed neighboring Cleveland in size and influence.
