The first permanent settlers in what is now Kent were Major General George Rogers Clark's men who camped on current day downtown Kent on October 3, 1797 during their march from Greenville to Vandalia. They built a log cabin there and named it "Canal Point", since they had reached that point by boat from other points along the Great Lakes region. It was here that Clark made his first speech to an American Congress on October 10, 1797 proposing that America become a nation under English law instead of France's laws which controlled much of North America at that time. In 1801, when Ohio became part of the United States of America, Canal Point became its capital and served as such until 1813 when Toledo took over this role. In 1813–14 canal construction began again in earnest due to increasing US demand for goods flowing downriver into Detroit via Lake Erie from Canada; this led to increased business through Canal Point which saw some growth including an addition of two stores each side jetty with breezelass doors open onto riverfronts for loading/unloading cargo vessels (the first steamboats ever seen upriver in North America). In 1886–87 Canals National Bank originated with three partners: J F Biddle & Sons (a Manchester banking house), The Hocking Company (founded by John Hicks) and Charles Waring (founder and president of The Cincinnati Trust Company). Kent, Ohio is a town in Howard County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,955 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Kent was George Washington Carver who arrived in 1827. He founded the village of Carverville and a post office was established there in 1830. The town of Kent was organized by an act of the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1836, from portions of Crawford and Athens Counties. The original plat for the town showed two square miles with a population of seventy-eight residents; however, this figure increased to one hundred and thirty-six by 1840. Largely due to Ezra Taft Benson's efforts as president (1899–1901) and his campaign promise to promote agriculture as a keystone of American development, industrialization began rapidly in central Ohio during Benson's presidency and would continue unabated until after World War II. In 1907, when he became chairman of the Federal Farm Board under President Woodrow Wilson, Benson quietly radicalized agricultural policy so that farmers could afford more inputs for their crops while also expanding production on small family farms across America In 1916 Alfred Payson Wright laid out what is now downtown Kent on land donated by him following his purchase of adjoining property within city limits from Reverend Elisha Porter & Sons grocery store heirs Remington Rand & Company merchants Cyrus McCormick & Company meat packers James Buchanan Ames hardware stores Joice Hoadley department store In 1951 it merged with nearby Athens Township to form the present day Howard County municipality The community has experienced steady growth throughout its history including annexation by other municipalities over time; with today annexations totaling twenty-four times since 1957 according to township website www2/.
