Kent, Ohio is a small town located in the eastern United States. The population was 9,839 at the 2010 census. The town is named after George Washington Kent, an early settler. The first post office in Kent opened in 1807. Kent became a municipality in 1903 and has since grown to include areas north of the city limits. The downtown core is anchored by the local Market Square shopping center and includes several blocks of shops and restaurants, as well as two library buildings and a large park with a baseball diamond and other sports facilities. East of downtown are smaller neighborhoods that contain various housing developments. Kent, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Kent County. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the Greater Cleveland area and has been a part of that region for more than 350 years. As one of the most severely depressed areas in Ohio, it has been home to many struggling families and businesses over the years. The town was originally founded by French Canadian settlers in 1795 as "Beaulieu". The name change came about because Beaulieu was near Montreal while Kent was closer to Toledo on the border with Canada. In 1814, when Stephen Auld became governor of Ohio, he ordered all towns within his jurisdiction to change their names to reflect American Indian Wars battlefields or honored warriors such as Tecumseh or John Custer who had fought for United States forces against Native Americans during these conflicts. According to The Great Lakes History Museum's website ( www.gleamuseum.org ), "the first post office in what would become Kent County opened on July 5, 1816." By 1800, there were only two homes in town - one owned by Peter Harrison and another rented from Isaac Hite - both being used as schoolhouses until . . . around 1830 when residents built their own homes around a small common." In 1836, local farmers formed a company that bought 1/4 acre (0.2 km²) of land east of downtown for $1 per acre ($140 total). This land later became known as “The Square Mile” because it filled up quickly with new homes and businesses after development started along Park Row Road which ran through downtown then curved northeastward forming an angle with I-670 just south of today’s shops at Rickenbacker Arena before turning northwest again crossing into Summit Township which bordered Painesville Township on its eastern edge." "This early period saw several milestone events including: construction of churches: First Baptist Church erected in 1840; Second Baptist Church built in 1845; Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel erected in 1850;" "In 1850 petitioners proposed changing town’s name from Beaulieu to Kent due to geographic similarities between nearby Ottawa County and Kent Township – both lying within present-day Stark County – but this proposal met stiff opposition from some residents who felt their community deserved its own moniker." "Eventually approval was given for the name change despite objections from some merchants who felt they were losing customers because traveling away from their stores directly into neighboring villages made shopping much more difficult for them." "Although initially considered unappetizing due primarily to its location adjacent to rustling buffalo herds," according Toole writes "the growing cityscape soon attracted numerous fashionable families seeking safe neighborhoods away from bustling Cincinnati"; eventually becoming "one of America's most prosperous communities while other portions experienced rapid decline during Reconstruction." ..."
