Kent, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Kent County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,452. The name "Kent" is from the Algonquian word ken-tah or "center." The first Europeans to encounter this area were French traders in 1796 who named it Point du Lac because of a small body of water located near present-day downtown Kent. The community developed around two railway stations: Kent Station on the Cincinnati and Dayton Railroad (1892), and Kent Station on the Chicago, Stroudsburg and Western Railway (1900). In 1913, both stations were renamed halfheartedly as Gateway Station after Gateway National Historical Park was established in nearby Springfield Township.Gateway became Kent when it was annexed by Kent County in 1920. The population grew rapidly during World War II due to military production at nearby Willow Run Arsenal; by 1945, it had reached 30,000 residents. After peace returned to America following World War II, growth slowed until the early 2000s when new housing developments began popping up all over centralKent Today's economy is based primarily on manufacturing with smaller businesses that rely heavily upon Interstate 75 for transportation; however there are some scattered farming operations still extant throughout centralKent The climate here is continental – mild winters with occasional cold spells followed by hot summers – but humidity levels can range from high “summer time” months to very low desert monthly averages . In fact, it is thought that coffee began being brewed on American plantations near Richmond, Virginia in 1795. In the early 1800s, coffeehouses became popular spots for locals and travelers to meet and share a cup of joe. By the 1860s, espresso machines were becoming more common in Italian cities, where they were used as an affordable dining option for wealthy elites. Over time, different regions developed their own unique styles of artisan coffee – such as Nicaraguan coffees from Managua; Ethiopian wafers from Addis Ababa; Guatemalan chicha from Antigua; and Colombian bolivian beans from Bogotá – which has helped make this beverage one of the most popular in the world. Kent, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, at the confluence of the Cuyahoga and Monongahela rivers. The population was 14,224 as of the 2010 census[1] and is part of Cleveland-Cleveland metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Kent was Nicholas Houghton in 1796. With help from Major Ridgely, an American Revolutionary War veteran, Houghton founded a post office in 1802 and began to plat his land around it on November 5, 1803. In 1824, he donated land to form Muskegon Heights Park near his home for public use and recreation; this park still exists today as Muskegon Heights Boulevard. In 1830s, farmers started growing corn on their properties along the banks of the Cuyahoga River; due to low water levels during heavy rains these crops were abandoned and only later were replanted with other crops such as wheat or soybeans. The first mill built in what is now Kent was located on Main Street (now I-480) between Prospect Avenue and White Oak Drive in 1836; this mill was destroyed by fire in 1938 but replaced by a new one about 10 years later which still operates today. In 1853–1854 local citizens organized a township government under the direction of then-Mayor John Paulding III following annexation into Cleveland from Muskegon Township.[2] When voters approved incorporation as a village on November 3rd, 1857,[3] Mayor Paulding named it "Kent" after himself because he felt that name would be more popular with residents than "Muskegon Heights".[4][5][6] The village had its start meeting place at Union Hall until 1861 when it moved to what is now First Baptist Church building before becoming its own municipality again starting December 1st that year.[7][8][9] On May 15th 1870 commissioners voted 2-to-1 against annexing neighboring Clinton Township into Kent Village because they felt that this would have caused too much change for their constituents who were already living there under their own governance system[10]. On July 1st 1870 boundaries were proposed for both townships based off current surveys[11]; however no action was taken at that time since political subdivision maps hadn't yet been developed statewide.[12][13][14] However on September 9th 1870 commissioners did vote unanimously to annex Clinton Township into Kent Village effective October 1st 1870,[15][16] marking the beginning of an era where villages quickly annexed smaller municipalities within their borders without any formal process or notification to those affected – something which continues up till present day with some villages taking advantage of unincorporated areas by annexing them completely while others have done so partially or not at all claiming these areas as part of their municipality boundaries
