Ironton is a small town in the state of Ohio, located about 25 miles northeast of Columbus. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,864. The name Ironton comes from the Ottawa and Miami River townsite in central Ohio and it was given to the village by John D. Rockefeller in 1923. The Village had a post office from 1871 until it closed in 1951. The village was founded on April 6, 1871 as part of a group of settlements around Granville Island called "Canton." When Granville Island was turned over to Ohio by Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War, most of those who had originally settled there moved away or were killed by General Sherman's forces that same year. Only 640 people lived in Ironton when it became a village; however, by 1925 all but 173 people lived there. In 1923, John D. Rockefeller donated land to establish Ironton as a community with its own school system and library. In 1951, both schools closed because they were no longer needed due to increased competition from other communities within the greater Columbus area. Today only one building remains standing in Ironton-the old Post Office- which serves as its former town hall and repository for local history materials dating back to 1871

Ironton, Ohio is a small town located in the heart of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 7,627 at the 2010 census, up from 5,906 in 2000. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by fur traders in 1788 and named for Sir John Ironton, 1st Baronet (died 1812). Ironton was first settled on the present site by Germans who arrived from Germany during the early 1800s. The village formed when a group of German farmers donated land to establish a village square in 1814. In 1824, Ironton became a county seat of Hardin County and remained so until 1907 when it merged into Summit County. In that year, however, Summit County abolished its county government and became District 9 of Cleveland metropolitan area which now includes part of Akron as well as most of Stark andSummit counties in northwestern Ohio. road built through Ironton including US-1A were originally called "Sir John's Road" after Sir John'ssettlement thereabouts in 1788 AD.
