The house served as Ironton’s first courthouse until it burned down in 1836. In 1840, Ironton became home to one of the first textile mills in America when Isaac Briggs founded the Briggs Manufacturing Company here. The company manufactured cloth and other products until its closure in 1957. Ironton has several churches including Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church (founded 1865), First Baptist Church (established 1830), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1819), and Protestant Reformed Church (founded 1789). Schools include Butler Middle School (opened 1973) and Popejoy Elementary School (opened 1961). There are also businesses such as Midland Tire & Rubber Co., First National Bank, Ford Technical College/Harrison Academy* (* opening 1984) and Anderson Chevrolet dealership*.
