Ironton was founded in 1825 and named for John Ironton, an early settler. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the border of two very important railroad lines: The Cuyahoga and Erie Canal ran through Ironton and made it a major commercial center; and The Great Lakes Railroad served as its main artery. It also became known for its large number of manufacturing plants, including four Paper Kites manufactories (founded in 1892), three Sheet Metal Workers' Union plants (1898-1901), one Foundry Company plant (1920), and one Welding Shop company (1927). The heyday of Ironton ended with World War II when many of the local manufacturing plants were destroyed or converted into military munitions factories. However, some continued operations until the late 1990s. Today, most industry has shifted away from manufacturing to services such as education and government support; however, some notable industries still operate in Ironton such as engineering services (+1% growth from 2005 to 2010) and retail (−3% since 2005).
