The Ironton Airforce Base is home to the Ohio Guard and the Ohio Air National Guard. The base was founded in 1941 as a World War II bomber plant. It became an air force station in 1948, and it served as an operational command center during the Cold War. In 1990, Ironton AFB was renamed for Major General Curtis LeMay, who served as commander of United States Strategic Command from 1991-1992. The base has been host to many airshows throughout its history, most notably the 1984 "Ironton Thunderbirds" show.

Ironton is a town in Fayette County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton-Muncie metropolitan area. Ironton was founded in 1798 by John Morrison and named for him. It became a city in 1853 and was renamed Ironton after its location on the Scioto River. The first settler to arrive in what is now Ironton was John Morrison who built his home on the banks of the Scioto River in 1798. One of the earliest businesses in Ironton was a ferry service across the Scioto River which served as an early means of transportation between Akron and Cleveland. In 1816, Ironton received its charter from then-Governor Nicholas Biddle and became one of eight towns within Fayette County that were granted municipal status by him. Ironton experienced several boom years during its early history including 1824 when it had a population of 300 people; 1830 when it reached 1,000 people; 1836 when it hit 2,000 people; 1840 when it hit 3,000 people; 1844 when it reached 4,000 people; 1850 when it reached 5,000 people; 1861when it reaching 6,500 people; 1865when it reached 7,500 residents. However with each passing year growth stopped or slowed down while poverty increased due to nongrowth jobs and low incomes among many residents especially those living near downtown which caused significant blighting throughout much of downtown such as brickyards where workers used to live above their Factories until they could afford to move out into better housing elsewhere around town (Galloway 1990). In 1870 Census there were 905 residents living in what is now Ironton making up about 60% of total population for that year whereas only 28% lived within two blocks radius of downtown which may have been because few opportunities existed for advancement outside rural areas then unlike today where cities are often destinations for recent graduates seeking good jobs regardless of zip code (Fletcher 1984). The rapid growth bringing more wealth along with corresponding high demand for housing led to skyrocketing prices within minutes walking distance from downtown resulting in extensive demolition and redevelopment all around town over time eventually causing neighborhoods like West Side Park to be completely destroyed leaving behind an open field surrounded by high rise buildings unrelated to any past community life while also continuing negative effects on nearby neighborhoods such as Flatsburg without any ability or control over future development (Werthimer 2016). This suburban sprawl continues unabated even today as new subdivisions pop up near large universities only providing more places for money laundering activity while Also reducing access points into old residential neighborhoods making them less desirable choices overall creating patterns that contribute towards increasing crime rates among young adults especially males (Krebs 2016).

Ironton is a city in the southern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Trumbull County and home to Ironton College, one of the largest private colleges in Ohio. The first permanent settler in what is now Ironton was Nicholas Prentice, who explored what would become Trumbull County in 1795. He named his property "Ironton" after himself and his farm on Ironton Creek located about two miles north of present-day Ironton. The creek became known as "Prentice's Run". In 1814, Jeremiah Morrow purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) along Mound Road from Nicholas Prentice for $5 per acre ($2700 at current prices). In 1828, he added an additional 432 acres (175 hectares), giving him 1,856 acres (692 hectares) total landholdings within Trumbull County. His holdings included several villages: Springfield Township (now part of Westfield), East Middleton Township (now part of Strongsville), Indian Rocks Township (now part of Mentor), Andover Township (now part of Dayton), North Union Township (now part of Kettering), New London Township (now parts of Ottawa and Delaware Counties) and portions including present-day Ironton proper. Morrow sold most or all his holdings to Josiah Henshaw in 1841 for $10 per acre ($28825 at current prices). At that time it was one third the size it is now. After serving as treasurer and president of trustees for Grinnell College from 1850 until its closure in 1865 due to financial problems, Henshaw donated much land to Grinnell College which became Grinnell University Park today.
