The United States Air Force deployed a gift from its members to the people of Ironton, Ohio on Christmas eve in 1951. The gift was a C-47 Globemaster III cargo plane. The plane had been donated by the then Mayor of Cleveland, James A. Rhodes and his wife Betty. The plane arrived at Ironton Municipal Airport on December 24th and was unloaded by the air traffic control tower personnel. They placed all of the gifts onboard the plane before takeoff for their destination, Dayton, Ohio. The passengers were led into the plane by Captain John Fenton and first officer Clyde Wesson who took over during the flight to Dayton as pilot and navigator respectively. Once they reached Dayton Municipal Airport, they taxied to their final destination - Armstrong World Industries complex - where they parked next to one of Armstrong's planes that had been donated for use as aChristmas present for local residents. After landing at Armstrong World Industries complex, Captain Fenton turned off engine 1 and announced "We're stopping now for good". As he did so, everyone disembarked from the airplane except Captain Wesson who remained behind in order to fly back home with additional donations that would arrive later on in the day while he was on leave from duty at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton.

Ironton is a small town in southeastern Ohio, located on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River. The township was formed in 1814 from parts of Logan and Scioto townships. Ironton's population peaked at over 10,000 in 1920, but has since shrunk to around 7,500 residents. The village of Ironton developed along the riverbank south of the township, and now lies within the township boundaries. Ironton is one of only two remaining townships in southeastern Ohio that were not merged into larger municipalities during the late 19th century. It is also one of only a few townships statewide that still preserves some vestige of its original self-government structure (town meetings are still held annually). The first settler to arrive in what is now Ironton was John Pugh, who arrived in 1796. Pugh built a log cabin on land he bought from the Shawnees near present-day Union Pierouard Park. In 1814, when Township No. 2 was organized, Pugh became its first mayor and served until his death in 1825. Two years later, Nathan Cook set up shop as a blacksmith at what is now First National Bank on Bridge Street just north of downtown Ironton. Cook established an early reputation for honesty and fairness among local merchants and residents alike - something that continues to be admired today by many people living near Fourth Street between Market and State Streets - shorthand for "the old days." Cook's business acumen solidified Ironton's reputation as an entrepreneurial community during this time; over time it would become known for being "the birthplace" of several notable entrepreneurs including George Naylor (founder/director of The Cleveland Press), Wm Matson (founder/director of Wabash Electric Railway), Jno Beasley (president/CEO American Tobacco Company) and Irwin Jacobs (founder/CEO Jacobs Engineering Company). Some notable buildings or sites associated with early life here include: Pugh Cabin #2 which still stands today on private property east side of Center Street; First National Bank building which stood until 1977 when it was destroyed by fire; Naylor & Sons machine shop which remains extant today; Second National Bank buildingwhich burned down in 1951 but was rebuilt soon afterwards; Cook House which stands current as partofpresent day daytime community center complex northeast corner Court Avenue & Bridge Street; Jacobs Engineering Company plant where components for then new American Tobacco product line were made before it went bankrupt in 1948; Beasley House* currently standing vacant across from courtyards west side south west corner lot formerly occupied by garage Now used as office building housing various businesses including nail salon & barbershop *Beasley House stood vacant across from courtyards west side south west corner lot formerly occupied by garage Now used as office building housing various businesses including nail salon & barbershop One significant change wrought throughout these years was increasing political power within township government – starting with Nathan Cook’s rise to prominence as Mayor – culminating with incorporation into Summit County effective January 1st 1901 following successful referendum vote conducted by all citizens residentially inhabiting Townshipexcluding those living within corporate limits Of course such evergreen moments don't come without price however . . .
