The Huber Heights Air Force Base is one of the largest in the United States and it has a rich airforce history. The base was founded on December 12, 1941 as General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters. It served as the original home of the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). The base was closed on September 1, 1947 and its functions were given to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. In 1949, Huber Heights Air Force Base became part of the newly formed Strategic Air Command (SAC). On April 15th, 1950 SAC was redesignated Eighth Air Force and on May 1st, 1951 it became Ninth Air Force. Whenactivated on September 1st, 1947 Ninth AF consisted of only 6 groups: 93d Bombardment Wing; 305th Bombardment Wing; 330th Fighter Group; 332nd Fighter Group; 350th Missile Wing/35th Missile Squadron. From October 26 to November 4th 1948 Ninth AF was relocated to Italy when Eighth AF opened at Bologna Airport. Headquarters for all USAAF forces in Europe were moved from Rome to Iwo Jima Island effective February 1945 when Japanese forces surrendered unconditionally. Inactivated on September 1st 1947 Tenth AF consisted of only 3 groups: 553d Troop Carrier Group stationed at RAF Lakenheath; 554th Troop Carrier Group stationed at RAF Northolt Park]; 915t Airlift Squadron based at RAF Mildenhall]. These organizations were reactivated effective January 1946 under Far Eastern Command when Japan abandoned its armed forces.] On December 12, 1941 General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters was established at Huber Heights AFB with an initial complement of 318 activated pilots and five officers assigned as commanders for each group totaling 18 aircraft! Over time these numbers grew until there were over 450 personnel working at Huber Heights AFB! The first unit activated from Huber Heights AFB was the 93d Bombardment Wing which arrived on December 16th! The squadron operated from temporary facilities located near Wheeler Field until they could be built new buildings! In early 1942 HQ USAFE had jurisdiction over allisaland including hubert heights AAFB [later NATO reporting name for Japan] where combat operations began against enemy targets beginning Mar 31 1942 HQ USAFE controlled all deployed fighter squadrons plus support units By summer 1944 HQ USAFE had more than 9000 operational fighters while control over Allied bomber force rested with URBAN command

In 1870, the Huber family sold their farm and moved to Highland Park.
