Hilliard, Ohio is a small town located in the west central portion of the United States. The population was 7,561 at the 2000 census. Hilliard is part of the Dayton-Cincinnati-Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Hilliard was French trader Pierre François de Bourgogne in 1778. He named it Pointe aux Meadows after his home village of Meadows in England. The town began as a small community on an artificial bay near the confluence of several rivers (the South Branch, Miami and Muskingum), founded by fur traders and missionaries working in that region during the early 1800s. In 1806, leaders of Cincinnati Purchased land east of Dayton from Native American leader Weahegan for $9,000 ($ when measured in dollars today). This area became known as Miamisburg because many Miamis were living there at that time. The site where Hilliard stands today was chosen for its natural resources: coal and iron ore which were abundant enough to support a small town but not so much that development would be impossible. In 1811–12 construction began on what would become one of Ohio's most famous landmarks: Riverview Hall; built on land donated by Colonel George Wrightson to house students at Yale University preparatory to their entrance into college. On October 12th, 1816, President James Kossuth announced to an audience at Riverview Hall that Ohio had become an independent nation! At this moment Hilliard became part of America! In 1830–31 Henry Clay wrote "The Clays Report", which proposed Manifest Destiny and called for Ulysses S Grant's march on Mexico City with Ulysses S Grant as Generalissimo (the event later known as "Gettysburg"). For more than fifty years following Clay's report Hilliard has been considered one of America's major coal mining communities - hosting two mines (the Hocking Coal Mine and the Watkins Powder Mill) responsible for over 50% of all Appalachian coal production from 1870 until newly discovered reserves closed them down in 1984. Today hillardians continue their proud tradition by honoring their local heros like Congressman John Lewis who spent his entire life fighting for civil rights including voting rights for African Americans throughout Appalachia before he died tragically young soon after winning office; along with Dr King whose movement trial testimony helped secure passage of the Voting Rights Act!
